That kid turned out criminal, literally criminal. Jail a few times, can't hold a job, etc. I'm not saying beat your kids.. I"m saying make them face the consequences of their actions, before they grow up to be a shining example of today's "adults."

So basically, what you're saying is that in a world of true scotsmen who know how to beat their kid just the right amount, these kids will grow up to be decent people. Funny, if such a world existed, there could also be a world of true scotsmen who know how to discipline kids with the perfect words and without violence.

Both are worlds are, ofcourse, fiction.

A country can also encourage each people to be individualist and liberal so that they will not have children, then the country just needs to wait for a while. Maybe depopulation is what we needed all along.

As someone who programmed a lot of C++ and Haskell, the languages are similar in a strange way. The only difference is in what's easy and what's hard. In Haskell, all the standard library is full with super safe and friendly containers. In C++, it is full with pointers and APIs with bound checking.

Now comes the interesting part. Theoretically, C++ allows you to write completely safe containers if you always bounds checking apis and rely on ugly templates. Haskell also allows you to directly access memory, do mallocs, and violate access.

The only difference is in the defaults of both languages and what functionality they choose to hide behind complicated APIs.

I think both languages have their places. In industry projects I'm maintaining now, some would better remain in C++ while others should have been rewritten in Haskell.

Still an atheist today, but I happily go to church every sunday, for the opportunity to be with a group of people local to my home who at least try to be better people, or think about being better people, 2 hours a week.

Judaism actually has this a non-written law. If you tell your Rabbi that you don't really believe in god, he'll say to just follow his rules and that belief will come along the way. I was always taught that in Christianity it doesn't work like that because Christianity is belief based while Judaism is rule based. Interesting to see this type of behavior with Christians as well. Do you think there are many atheist church goers? Or are you a major exception?
