First, it seems this article here forgot the little detail that the person in question was a convicted criminal, out on parole. Which means he doesn't have the same rights as most people. If police asks for his phone he can't say "the passcode is in my head, and you can't have it" because that is a parole violation and he goes straight back to jail. Police doesn't need a search warrant because he is on parole.
In other situations, there are two dangers: Police with a search warrant, or criminals trying to get into your bank account. If police with a search warrant arrives, you have no choice but to unlock the phone or there are serious consequences. But if a criminal tries to look over your shoulder to get your password, that is when biometrics is your friend.
Now I don't know how you run your life, but in my life criminals are a bigger and more likely danger than police with a search warrant.
