Submission + - Airline Says It Owns The Word "Northwest" 2

Freshly Exhumed writes: "Northwest® Airlines, the major airline whose market branding is being phased out after it was acquired by Delta, charges that it has exclusive ownership of the common, geographically descriptive term northwest." The Minnesota-based airline is going after the operator of a small, Spokane Washington web site that provides tourist information for visitors to the Pacific Northwest. From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: '[the site's owner] said he has so far spent more than $4,000 in the past few months to defend his site, and he's looking at thousands more going forward as he faces battles in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.' Presumably the Government of Canada will be the next Northwest® target victim, what with their use of the term to name some of their Territories since 1870. I don't suppose Northwest® can sue the world's cartographers, geocachers, boy scouts, etc. can they?"

Oh yeah, this is gonna be good. 4chan is officially too popular for AT&T's ridiculous stunt to go unnoticed.

Given all that obnoxious, hilarious crap that ensued over the Church of Scientology videos...*munch, munch* I can only imagine the blind, adolescent fury that will be aimed in AT&T's general direction.

Submission + - AT&T blocks img.4chan.org from customers (reddit.com) 11

bmecoli writes: "AT&T seems to be blocking img.4chan.net which hosts the infamous /b/ (random) board, as well as /r9k/. Those who have contacted AT&T representatives were told that the site is in fact blocked, so this isn't a technical problem, and all the other 4chan subdomains work fine."

In Canada, No Expectation of Privacy On the Net 206

The_AV8R writes "In a recent interview, Peter Van Loan, the new Canadian Public Safety minister, says ISPs should be able to provide private user information without a warrant. (The only example he gave was cases of child pornography; the interviewer pointed out that in these cases ISPs are already at liberty to divulge customer information without a warrant, but that the proposed rules would make that mandatory whenever the police ask.) He was adamant that in regard to IP addresses, names, cell phone numbers, and email addresses: '...that is not the kind of information about which Canadians have a legitimate expectation of privacy.' The minister denied — even when presented with an audio clip proving otherwise — that his predecessor had promised never to allow the police to wiretap the Internet without a warrant."

Submission + - Sesame Street DVD Deemed Adult-Only Entertainment

theodp writes: "The earliest episodes of Sesame Street are being made available on DVD, but the NYT notes Volumes 1 and 2 carry a rather strange warning: 'These early 'Sesame Street' episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today's preschool child.' So why are they unsuitable for toddlers in 2007? Well, in the parody 'Monsterpiece Theater,' Alistair Cookie — played by Cookie Monster — used to appear with a pipe, which he later gobbled. 'That modeled the wrong behavior,' explained a Sesame Street executive producer, adding that 'we might not be able to create a character like Oscar [the Grouch] now.'"

Submission + - Apple stops bootcamp downloads (neowin.net)

Christopher Blanc writes: "Apple Inc. has pulled the beta of Boot Camp, the application that lets Mac users run Windows XP or Vista on their Intel-powered machines, from its servers in preparation for Friday's launch of Leopard.

Although a Boot Camp 1.4 beta page remains live, clicking on the download link brings up an error message that reads: "The page you tried was not found." A graphic of the Mac OS X 10.5 packaging appears in the background. Earlier this month, Apple reminded users that the license to Boot Camp would expire when Leopard shipped. The application's beta has been available free of charge for Mac owners running Mac OS X 10.4, commonly known as Tiger.

Submission + - Zero Day Flaw in Windows DRM App Under Attack (zdnet.com)

161st Street writes: Malware authors are actively exploiting a zero-day privilege escalation vulnerability in a copy protection application installed by default in Windows XP and Windows 2003. The unpatched vulnerability, confirmed in the Macrovision SafeDisc (secdrv.sys) DRM scheme for online games, can be exploited to overwrite arbitrary kernel memory and execute malicious code with SYSTEM privileges. Symantec has confirmed in-the-wild attacks and the public availability of exploit code.

Submission + - Servers hosed, World Series ticket sales suspended

j-turkey writes: According to ESPN news, due to unexpected demand, the Colorado Rockies had to suspend World Series Ticket sales today after their hosted servers failed. The Rockies said up to 20,000 tickets would be available for each World Series game in Denver but opted for online sales only, saying that would be the most fair. Within the first 90 minutes of ticket sales, the site (hosted by Irvine, Calif.-based Paciolan Inc) reached over 8.5 million hits. No word yet on when tickets will go back on sale. However, the Rockies are likely under pressure to resume sales as soon as possible, as their home games begin this Saturday.

Submission + - Vonage Down, Not Accepting PSTN Calls

MikeyTheK writes: From the In Case You Care department, Vonage's PSTN network connection is down. At around 14:00 EDT I noticed that my Vonage phone was not accepting inbound calls. After being on the phone with TS for about an hour, they notified me that (nearly) nationwide, Vonage is not connected to the PSTN, so calls from the Outside World are not coming though.

That also means that if you have a failover number with Vonage it won't do anything, either, because Vonage isn't able to route it at this time. They don't have an ETA to get everything back up yet.
