It is a truth universally acknowledged that all operating systems suck. Some just suck less than others.

It is also a comment under pretty much every Reg article on Linux that there are too many to choose from and that it's impossible to know which one to try. So we thought we'd simplify things for you by listing how and in which ways the different options suck.. They give a good summary of the state of each of their top 9 favourites.

  • Which one supports the great majority of hardware? Which one has an intuitive interface? Which one doesn't need me to go into obscure configuration files to install a driver? Lets me focus on using my PC instead of supporting it? Will play graphics-intensive games without a 50% performance hit? Any of them? No? Well, that's too bad.
    • In practice Ubuntu or Mint.

      Generally there's no PC operating system that will let you fully focus on using rather than maintaining, however a reasonable desktop Linux (either of the two I mentioned) will reduce the load well below the load of maintaining a secure Windows install, especially with the difficulties of ensuring that telemetry and other spy services are turned off.

    In retrospect, my installing Bitcoin Core on a Tumbleweed install wasn't the best idea.

Disraeli was pretty close: actually, there are Lies, Damn lies, Statistics, Benchmarks, and Delivery dates.
