Cutriss writes: Now that Caprica is gone and SG:U has concluded, I see new shows coming in their place such as Alphas and the Red Faction series, and I find myself asking if the fate of Atlantis and SG:U have gone differently if SyFy had been a paid cable network. I know the /. audience would probably trade a few dollars a month if it meant replacing wrestling and ghost-chasing shows with relicensed classics and more appropriate treatment of original content. Plus, with a paying audience, the ad space would become much more lucrative and SyFy could lose some of the seedier ads it has been saddled with lately and better fund new original content.
Style over substance (Score:2)
SyFy is a triumph of style over substance. Right down to the name -- a clever marketing play, erase the generic term with a brand. Unfortunately for the clever marketer, Scifi has one of the few followings that require substance.
Nothing could have saved SyFy. The only thing that could have saved the SciFi Channel was leadership that understood its market.

If it goes premium then I would expect to be treated like an HBO user is - that is no ads. But I seriously doubt if there would be enough subscribers to pay for the network. Science fiction has always been niche programming and never mainstream. It would be nice if SyFy turned back to roots though. I certainly would expect them be able to keep a series like SGU longer than two seasons though.
With the cancellation of SGU, I really don't see the need to watch anything on that network. The shows remaining aren
