Star Wreck Released as Download 239
Arto Rantala writes "After seven years of production, Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning, the Finnish Star Trek / Babylon 5 parody movie, was finally released on DVD a month ago and is now available for download. In spite of its practically zero budget, the film has a hilariously captivating story, top notch CGI and even a couple of performances from professional actors. Download it now and buy the DVD if you like it! I know I did. You can also obtain it directly from the .torrent"

The future looks bleak for Captain Pirk. Originally from the far future, he traveled back to save the world, but was shipwrecked on the 21st century. The world of the past is a dangerous place and he is finding it difficult to convince the ladies he is, in fact, an intergalactic space hero from the future. To make things right Pirk comes up with a questionable plan to save mankind's future...

Anyways, enjoy the movie - I pre-ordered the DVD and I've only watched it three and half times, but even based on such flimsy conclusions I can say I seriously think this thing just rules, one of the best scifi special effect movies I've seen, parody or not.
What I find it interesting is that the website also has the .srt subtitles *and* a fairly detailed explanation from the translator on the intricacies of the translation - I sure hope this will make fan-provided translations a little bit better. Right now, I'm waiting for them to release the kind-of-promised SW:ITP soundtrack. This movie has some damn good music.

Not to worry. You could almost say there's more B5 spoofage in this movie than any Trek-related stuff. (The previous installments of the Star Wreck series have been pure Trek spoofage, though.)

However right now at the time of this post it's almost midnight in local Finnish time (EET) so downloading from the Finnish servers might be the fastest direct download link ATM. Lots of fins are either partying/boozing or sleeping at the moment, or have downloaded the movie earlier today.
The Finnish servers are:
http://www-fi.starwreck.com/ [starwreck.com]
http://www-fi2.starwreck.com/ [starwreck.com]
However it is strongly adviced that you use bittorrent - if you want to get the movie a bit faster

I'd gather that DVD version is better visually, I'm not a hifi junkie, but those xvid artifacts were hideous. DVD may also have better resolution to look for those easter eggs (communication system.. ;) and other funnies.
It was so very weird to watch the movie and recognize so many places. B5-alike station features a hall, walkways and auditorium from my school, Tampere University of Technology [www.tut.fi].
It has its rough edges, but it's funny, even the most basic wooden-leg-jokes (checking malfunctioning blaster..). And damn, it's a full 2 hour movie packed with things like that.

I think the torrent systems are over-hyped as a SPEEDY way to download files. Like the Nutella and clones that followed the primary purpose of these things are (as I understand them):
* Provided a persistent (in the sense of "keeps trying") download for large files, with error correction, restart-ability, multiple sources/paths etc.
* Relative anonymity. The point is to guarantee that the file you end up with is the file you went after... authenticate the data, not you.
* Reduce or eliminate bandwidth cost to original file providers by spreading the workload out to (among others) home users.
* Manage your download and corresponding upload activity so as not to render your web browser useless. In other words there are caps placed on how much of your bandwidth gets used.
* Do all this without human intervention or giant server farm managing it.
You might look for some settings in your client that will speed things up, but depending on who else is downloading and what their limitations are, these adjustments may have little effect, no effect, or may make things worse.
Best bet is to start the download in the background and forget about it for a while (but don't forget so much that you turn your computer off at night). Look for a present under the tree 13 hours from now.
