Is the 503 failure in any published version of the slash code? Do we know what their story is?
It's really annoying, but even more than that it's lame. Assuming that your webapp is halfway well written, and you aren't serving video, it seems like advertising should be able to fund your CPU and bandwidth requirements. Otherwise there is something about your business that is stupid and broken.
Or am I crazy? Is there no advertising revenue lately or something? Can't they afford servers and bandwidth?
