Journal damn_registrars's Journal: Award for special dediction to obtuse trolling goes to ... 14

Smitty, of course

The specific effort here has to deal with his 2 week long fact-free diversion driven by his utterly unhinged hatred for the NIH. Start back here where I pointed out that our broken health care system needs to be completely scuttled to arrive at something that could ever improve outcomes. Then out of nowhere he declares the NIH to be an "epic disaster" , in spite of the fact that they do not have any meaningful role in the patient-provider aspect of health care. Strangely enough he mentions it right after backtracking away from his anti-factual bit about Sweden (perhaps in some alternate reality) abandoning Nordic Socialism.

Shortly after in a different thread we saw his NIH hatred come up again . He came up with a few random musings on the matter, including

The NIH is a bureaucracy first; its mission a distant second.

The NIH is symptomatic and related to the general turn from prosperity to Socialism, with the attendant economic/demographic/moral/happiness collapse.

I don't hate the NIH staff: I don't even know them. What I despise is the worship of bureaucracy on offer.

Yes, I actively hate the homo bureaucratus infestation that reduces people to livestock.

Going to Single Payer and importing the NIH would be a cure so much worse than the disease

Not a single one of which he gave any factual support for. Along the way he kept insisting that I was somehow calling them "perfect", in spite of multiple comments where I very plainly said the opposite of that. He did get in his last posts on the matters, so clearly he won on that dimension.

  • In reality, I've been too busy to care to bother researching any specifics. But hey, thanks for the JE!

I think with the amount of time you spent coughing up fact-free nonsense, you could have looked up even one thing about the NIH to complain about that is actually connected to reality. That's a really low bar to clear, there.

      • Also, I realize that this is a religious topic for you. You are correct. Your science is settled. There really isn't any dialogue to have. Carry on.

You couldn't possibly be more wrong on that. I have stated multiple times that the NIH is not perfect. I acknowledge there are ways to improve it.

All I've been asking - repeatedly and consistently - is for you to bring up a valid and fact-based concern.

Your whining about them have been as reasonable as asking NHTSA why they haven't put a man on Mars yet.

I'll even give you one. I don't like how much say they have in the careers of young scientists. While it often has more to do with the grant

          • Many careers are torpedoed by obtuse regulations that the applicants have zero control over; I had a 20 minute bitch session with a customer today over that exact topic. The mantra "publish or perish" is not nearly as applicable as "no grant, no advance[ment]".

This is a genuinely bad thing, and I have no actionable suggestion for how to improve the situation.

So we've agreed that there is indeed at least one thing wrong with the NIH. Now can you please share something else you dislike about them, but limit it to something that you can support with facts? So far every single criticism you have leveled against them here has been counter to reality.

              • Has it occurred to you that I have precisely shag-all interest in actually discussing the NIH? I am negatively disposed toward bureaucracy in general, and that's it. Spending a bunch of time researching the precise ways in which bureaucracy failed here is only going to get you into your shoot-the-messenger mode, also a total bore. Yes, I've seen you voicing your bit on that before.

Yet here you have an opportunity to pick apart an institution that you are showing rather profound hatred towards, and rather than actually showing something to be wrong with it, you pin things on it that don't apply to it. That goes beyond a poorly constructed argument and all the way in to the realm of utter nonsense.

On top of that, it turns in to another case where you exempt yourself from the rules you apply to others. If I said that Donald T

Despite being shown the obvious solution countless times? Still in denial I see

Well, let's hope you're not blaming the bureaucrats, or the people that hire them. I mean, the choice is yours. Who watches the watchers?

This was offered in the context of the NIH, but thank you for playing.

                    • Nice try, but ultimately, the NIH, along with the entire government, is controlled by your reelected officials, and that of course, leads to the voters. So the solution is right there in front of you. But keep on denying the real cause of all malfunctions

                    • Dude, the NIH is in England, but keep digging, and you'll get there.
                    • Oh really? [nih.gov] I believe you have them confused with the NHS, which is England's National Health Service. Have I dug deep enough? Or will you serve up another distraction?

                    • Oh, you're absolutely correct. I am an idiot, and hang my head in shame. At no point did I intentionally rubbish the National Institutes of Health. I will now go lay by my dish.
