This is one Burma Shave I was sorry to write

  • Once I found that I can buy working, DRM-free copies of the old versions for only a few dollars a pop, I really had a hard time coming up with a reason to buy the newest version. I'd rather have the earlier ones at this point in my life when I rarely have more than an hour or so (and often less than half that) to game at a time, and that isn't really a useful window of time for the newest versions of much of anything.
    • 2k had a single 128x128 grid.
      3k had a single 256x256 grid - 4x the area
4 had (if you made the map 256x256 tile segments) 4x4 grids, meaning 1x x 1k, and nice graphics.
if 5 had been just more of the same, say 2x x 2k, (with individual tiles up to 512*512) it would have been a must-have. They could also have added optional start years of 1800 and 1850 - rail transport and stagecoach, hick towns, the 2 wws, etc.
      • So it sounds like simcity 5 (I haven't purchased or played it myself) added lots of headaches but no meaningful features, correct? Then why go past 4? Or did I miss something?
        • They added even more detail, but reduced the size of the map; they said they couldn't get their game engine (glassbox, same as SC4) to render large maps with the extra details and features.

Everyone is complaining about the city being too small. So no, there's no reason to go beyond SC4.

  • But I just burned out on video games around Civ IV.
    • Thanks. I used to like different games, but for a long time, it's just been the occasional SimCity marathon session, then leave it for another 6 months. Don't have a single game on my phone. Tried OpenTTD to try something a bit different, but it's really for me - the UI isn't the best. I guess I'm jaded - I want something at least as good in terms of game-play as 25-year-old games. Heck, I'd even settle for 1990 graphics :-)
      • I just pick up a box and feel two days of my life drained away vampirically in 20 seconds. Put the box down. Much cheaper that way.

Good day to avoid cops. Crawl to work.

Working...
