My dear smitty_one_each, in an effort to save time, please find the answer to your post checked below.

___: Your post ignored because an assertion is not an argument

___: A rational tone is not a substitute for a rational argument
___: You failed to detect lies and bias in your news source.

  • Because if it read

___: An irrational tone is not a substitute for a rational argument

Then it would better reflect the "argument" strategies that I see often here on slashdot. I don't encounter him often, but if he mimics some of those that I do often see, you could also add

___: Your insult-to-argument ratio has exceeded that which qualifies as an argument.
    • Not a typo. Smitty_one_each is emotionally even-keeled in his posts.

    • An irrational tone is not a substitute for a rational argument

Just because a person may be British (or take on that tone) does not mean they are rational. A polite facade has its utility. I'd rather have an argument than a series of contradictions [mindspring.com].

      • Yeah, I engage in shenanigans from time to time, but I'm generally arguing a sincere position.
Sure, I don't turn every riposte into a dissertation, but life is too short to be wasting anyone's time.
        • The fact is that most of our views on just about everything are diametrically opposed to each other so we are bound to disagree on almost everything. And one doesn't need knowledge (nor verbosity) so much as logic to make a good argument. When arguing I'm generally more interested in learning from new ideas (and perhaps altering my perceptions) than to being persuaded or just listening to the choir. You are more engaging and thoughtful than many people, and I wouldn't be reading or replying to your journals

          • PMF would probably share the same sentiments.

During the Korean War, American jet pilots would sometimes come up with a worthy opponent, which they supposed to be a Russian flying a Korean jet.

What was the difference? The Koreans would take a shot and run. The Russians would hang with you in a dogfight.

            • There are many wrong ways to go, but this is among the more proper:

The most ably commanded destroyer of Taffy III, JOHNSTON was repeatedly referenced by the Japanese as a "heavy cruiser." She was credited as the first ship of Taffy III to attack Centre Force and charged the four ships of Cruiser Division Seven at 30 knots. After launching a full spread of ten torpedoes, the heavy cruiser HIJMS KUMANO was hit and put out of action. Aggressively screening the escort carriers throughout the entire morning, JOHNSTON finally sank with a loss of 186 men.

              ...

At 1010 JOHNSTON rolled over and began to sink. A Japanese destroyer came up to 1,000 yards and pumped a final shot into her to make sure she went down. A survivor saw the Japanese captain salute her as she went down.
