Journal grub's Journal: Slashdot or Multiply 10

I'm on both right now ('grieder' on Multiply) and find that Slashdot is much more to my liking. Granted I haven't done much on Multiply other than read and post a few comments but it's just not my thing. Much of what I see on Multiply has been linked over from slashdot and I just don't see the need for a second discussion forum.

Rather than deleting my multiply account and dropping it entirely, I've turned off all email alerts for everything other than private messages. That way I can see if I really miss it (doubtful)

Slashdot is a news site (or so they claim ;)) with some good discussions in the comments geared to the story. Multiply seems much more contrived... Come up with a topic and hope people talk about it.

YMMV, but I'm sticking close to the loveable ol' hag known as Slashdot.

Slashdot or Multiply

  • I thought Multiply sucked, which is why I bailed. Unlike you, I deleted my account, though.

Can't say I've ever missed it.

I doubt I'll miss it, I surely won't miss the email notifications; I had it set to notify me of posts and replies. Even then I hardly read them.

If anything I may just keep the account so I can claim the name :)
    • I've run into the 20 second and 2 minute rule here and said "I need to spend less time here"...

Still there is a gap between slashdot and multiply that needs filled... that's when people will really move in a mass exodus...
      • So, uh, how is the developement on Unread.org coming?

        /me ducks
        • When I have time that I want to devote to unread (which isn't much), I've rewritten it like 3 times. I have an overall idea, but probably don't have the javascript/css chops to pull it off. Multiply has much more bells and whistles than what I'm looking for...

Functionality wise, though, I think I can beat'm all...
First, you make a user, then you put in a bunch of rss feeds of stuff you normally read. You can then build stories off of these feeds. This is how the 'front page' works.
          Then there is JE's
  • I can get to it from work these days, but for some reason it does not seem to work very well, despite the fast connection. It works better from home, but it's just, as you say, not my thing.

Slashdot does what I want, without a lot of cruft. I've been reading for seven or eight years now, and I still like it.
  • ...I ended up not using the e-mail alerts and using the My Multiply page instead. Works a lot better.

Dunno, YMMV and all that, but I like the commenting and so on there better, and the ability to embed media content. Having avatars also helps to identify people more readily (what can I say, I'm a more visual person).

OTOH I also haven't entirely abandoned Slashdot, either, and don't intend to. I still read here as well and post comments, even if I don't post JEs as much anymore.

    Multiply's been down all

  • Tried it, didn't like it. Unlike many, I've never really had a problem with Slashdot, though. Sure, the posting limit gets annoying at times. But with many having left, I no longer hit that. On the other side of the fence, I find Multiply to verge on being too slow to be useable. It randomly decides whether or not to let me reply to a comment. It won't let you selectively quote multiple parts of the message. No, I'll be sticking around here.

That said, I haven't really been doing much either here or over t

  • I am on both. I don't dislike Multiply, but I don't really like it either. I am there because so many /.ers are there.

What I would like to see would be for /. to pick up some (not necessarily all) true social networking features. If journals where a little more under users control it would be a lot nicer IMO. Maybe some people would even come back from Multiply.

    My ideas:
Reciprocal friend system (current version might be kept as a watch list or something)
Option to turn off lameness filter on JEs
    Improve forma
  • I have an account under the same user name not only in Multuply but also in MySpace, Lastfm, etc. Let's not talk about what is Slashdot, what is Multiply, but talk about how is the main character of the users in them. The opinions of users won't change whatever the site they are.

With your bare hands?!?

Working...
