Journal NFLFan's Journal: NFL Thoughts: April 14, 2006 11

Football thoughts:

  • What are the Titans thinking by banning Steve McNair from their training facility?
  • So the Patriots have an agreement in principal with Richard Seymour. Under different circumstances I would say good move, because it is a good move, but in their situation it was a must. Word was that the Patriots did not make a bigger push to retain Givens, McGinest, and Vinatieri because they "needed" that money to extend Seymour and Branch. Interesting that it is said to only be a four year contract; the guy was going to be under contract through 2006 so I guess it is a hefty raise and a 3 year extension. He has missed some time the past few years with knee injuries.
  • I do not know or really care if Brett Favre is coming back or retiring but I think if the Packers had not drafted Aaron Rogers, a quarterback, in the first round last year then everybody would know by now what Favre future plans are. I do not think Favre is dragging his feet to punish the Packers but I think he views the Rogers pick as a wasted pick because it does not help him. Yes, the Packers need a quarterback to eventually replace Favre but last year there were 3 or 4 starting quarterbacks who the Packers had early in their careers and none of them were high draft picks. Heck, Favre was not a 1st rounder. Had the Packers just made some free agent signing then maybe they would know have an answer by now.

The other starters by the way: Matt Hasselbeck, Kurt Warner, Mark Brunell, and Aaron Brooks.

  • Torn hamstring, surgery might be needed. Wow, now we know why LenDale White sort of imploded.
  • Why is Brad Childress still talking about Culpepper? Culpepper either wanted out of town, which is understandable with that boat scandal, or a huge contract to stay. Now the guy is gone and it is time to move on.
  • Word is Culpepper is already running. I think he will be the Dolphins opening day starter.
  • I think Lavar Arrington needs to re-think his contract demands. The word is that he wants $7 million a year! Sorry, but that is the kind of money that Richard Seymour's contract is going to be and Seymour is a lot better than Arrington.
  • I think I agree with Merril Hoge that I would not trade up to draft any of the top three quarterbacks. Too much risk with other good players still available.
  • So Matt Leinart fired Leigh Steinberg. To paraphrase an old football adage: when you have two agents you have none!

Baseball thoughts:

  • Very good to see Barry Bonds struggling. Nothing sort of a miracle will prevent him from getting those 6 home runs but I would welcome it not occurring until say June! And now the news that he could be facing perjury charges!
  • Who is Chris Shelton? Okay, I know who he is but wow!
  • What is the big deal with David Wells having a bad outing? The guy got beat up in his rehab start and now he got beat up in his first start. The guy is just not ready.
  • Sure looks like the Yankees could use some pitching.
  • Guess Batman knows baseball.
  • I heard the other day that the Marlins payroll is under $15 million! That is just crazy low.
  • Can someone explain how the Mets escaped disciplinary action while the Nationals did not?

  • Chris Shelton isn't that big of a surprise to Tigers fans - he hit 18 HR's and hit .290 last year, when he got called up to replace the horrible Carlos Pena.

So why the Power Surge now?

Watch his swing - really watch his swing. It's fantastic, and Shelton does a good job of hitting the pitch where it's at, and 6 times this year he's connected to put it in the stands.

He also has 2 triples, and several doubles, becuase he uses the whole field and can line them to the gap.

When Shelton says he's not a home

  • any word from the Bear's camp?

Been too busy lately to look it up.

Hook me up if you can...thanks.
    • I haven't heard anything, which is a good thing. Not much has changed except for the offensive adds, which is a good thing seeing how well they did last year. Just enjoy the ride and hope for a little better than next year (which is very possible seeing that Minnesota has taken like 2 giant steps backward with losses and the packers probably without favre).
      • I agreee with you that Minnesota probably has gone backwards but for the second year in a row I am hearing some football people suggest Minnesota losses make them a better team. I just don't get it. They were a better team with Moss and Culpepper.
    • Well I have not heard much myself, which is probably a good thing all and all.

Did you know, Lovie Smith really pushed for Mike Martz to get the offensive coordinator job in Detroit!!! Thought that was interesting.

The Bears' schedule does not seem too difficult but...

So far they have signed three free agents: John Gilmore (TE), Brian Griese (QB), and Dante Wesley (DB). Heard that they might sign Ricky Manning Jr. but that windows is closing sort of fast because he is a restricted free agent. Word is that
      • thanks for the scoop.

that's about what I expected. I don't see them drafting a wide reciever, unless they go with the ole "the best athlete available" BS. I hope they don't.

I'm guessing either a tackle or TE. We'll see.
  • The Titans are just playing some hardball with McNair. They need to whittle his contract down to size, and are simply putting pressure on to see what they can achieve. Frankly, I think they'd be better off drafting Leinart or Young, letting them stand on the sidelines for a year and put McNair's money to work elsewhere on the roster.

You gotta make those kind of choices sooner or later. Right, Green Bay Packers???
    • Well I do not think they are going to go anywhere with McNair but it is just wrong to keep him under contract like that and not allow him into their facility. McNair has re-structured for them so many times that they need to either just cut him or honor that contract and try to restructure.
