Journal FortKnox's Journal: Need help finding a toy... 12

Joey's third birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him a whole set of navy boats for his bath (battleships, maybe an aircraft carrier, etc...). Just plastic toys that float is all I'm hoping for. I'd like them to be sizable not little tiny things...

I'm having the hardest time trying to find something like that. Anyone have any ideas??

  • If you don't mind:
    1) building things
    2) small parts (big problem with baby!)
    3) an absolute mess

if you can't find what you're looking for, you might get one of those model battleship or aircraft carrier kits (you can often find them for $13-20) at the hobby shop. A lot of those ships are hollow and so you might be able to get some styrofoam and shape it and place it inside the boat, and weigh the bottom of the boat down with pennies or something (to keep it right-side-up), and seal everything else with RTV

This page [markat.co.uk] has two floating battleships and torpedos. (Toypedo battleships) Meant for the pool.
(Sounds like they might have small parts)

AHA! This [gagworks.com] isn't very realistic but it's cheap and a battleship and floats! And no small parts!

I will see what else I can find.
      • Alright, all of the toys I mentioned can be found at other online stores in the U.S. and are apparently pretty popular toys, so you might want to check around for a site that you're comfortable with (more legitimate-looking?), if you want to buy one of these toys.

If not, I must say that my search results were much improved in trying to find something the size you want when I stopped looking for bath tub toys, bath toys, floating somethingoranother, etc. and started looking for pool toys instead. Might hel
  • I don't know if you've noticed, but military-related toys aren't really "in vogue" of late. I mean, try to find a toy gun, right?

I don't even see that many boats around anymore.

The closest thing I can think of are model kits -- and you don't want to give one of those to a 3-y.o.

I hate to be such a spoilsport, but even someone (who has looked at LOTS of toys!) saying that she hasn't seen anything close might be useful. In this case, I think "bathtub" "toy" "battleship" "aircraft carrier" and google may
    • I mean, try to find a toy gun, right?

No kidding. So what that means is Joe gets to learn to shoot a real .22 (Hey, don't want to start him out on my brother's 10mm or my mom's 45 right away, right?)

      That's the goal, isn't it?

BTW, they can be found. I was shocked last Xmas working at TRU to find that they still exist. You just have to look for them. And not dayglo orange. Yes, the tip of the barrel is orange (CPSC decision??), but the rest is black. Also, if you want to spend a little bit more money, you

Growing up my step dad had tons of guns, was ex Marine, and believed strongly in gun safety. They were locked up somewhere and frankly us kids (three total) didn't care where. We never had "gun looking" toy guns as he didn't believe that we should belittle the power of a real gun by having something that might teach us to not respect their true power. We were annoyed at this for a while (like ten minutes or so, but a long time for one in the 1st
    • I tried google, amazon and other places before making the JE. Been having a rough time trying to find it so I was hoping someone would know something.

Took me a while to find little green soldiers (but I did, eventually)... you'd think the whole 'support our troops' thing would get some more toy military on the shelves... shrug...
  • My wife got a bunch of those things for our kids a while back, and I think she got them at the Dollar Tree. Little cheap plastic things that kept them very happy in the tub, nothing special. She finds all kinds of weird goodies in there all the time.

    I hope that helps.

And by the way, I never said "Thanks" for all your work on the PhotoKon. So I'll say it now - Thanks, that was fun!

  • I had a large toy priate ship when I was little. It had little pirates with swords and I would take over my other toy ship in the tub. The guys hands were cupped so the would hold on to their swords, the plasting netting, the mast of the crow's nest, etc.
  • Overthrow the government of a small south american country, let Joey be in charge and voila, you have his bathtub army.

    As a bonus, you'd become a dictator.

    Have fun storming the castle.
