VIII Under Revision - this article
WHAT: This is the eighth of a series of nine articles I'm posting about sex, gender and identity.
WHY: Recent journal entries by several people showed the need. I began the series knowing the risks to my own privacy, of being "outed", but it has turned out to be worth it, since it has helped others
RULES: As always, any honest reply or question is welcome, and will be answered, and posted as a top-level JE so that others can read it. This is a sensitive topic, and the people who are most affected are in many cases extremely vulnerable. Please show the same compassion for them as you would want for yourself or a loved one if the situation were reversed.
Congratulations to Some Woman for winning the poll. Ruzty gets honourable mention (for acknowledging I'm a Canuck even if I'm not from BC
Autogynephiles - Under Revision
In the beginning, there were patients, ostensibly men, who complained about feeling like they were "women trapped in mens bodies." Doctors said, "Well, you have a psychiatric condition, and we can treat that psychiatric condition with therapy, hormones, and a sex change." And all was, if not good, at least tolerable.
Then a curious thing happened. Research showed that the basis for this feeling of being a "woman trapped in a mans' body" had its origin in the brain - that certain structures in m2f transsexuals were the same as those of genetic women, not genetic men. Being a transsexual was no longer a mental illness, it was caused by hormones changing the development of the brain before birth. Transsexuals were "born that way", not "made." A sex change could now be seen as correcting a birth defect. And all should have been better.
Note: The rest of this article will have to be re-written. I made some statements that were, at best, unfair, and for that I apologize. I will do my best to make an impartial re-examination of the facts before reposting.

Fortunately, your question is of a much more practical nature.
The answer, as it stands today, is that the whole theory of autogynephilia as transsexualism is based on bad science. Thats why its been losing a lot of favour in the last 2 years - people are looking beyond the "mumbo-jumbo
