In Australia if you have lived with a person for more than a set time (which may vary from state to state) you are considered to be a de facto partner. Once you've attained that status, if the relationship falls apart the assets of that relationship are divided between the parties. If the relationship was relatively short term and you were the partner who brought the most (financially) into the relationship, you stand to lose out financially. No, it's not about the girl getting everything. It's not sexist. If the woman was the major bread-winner and owned the house, then the man moved in with her, HE is entitled to a share of the house and her money.

Apple injunction stops Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "It seems when Australia accepted US IP laws through free trade agreement just years ago, they didn't anticipate the problems that would be caused by today's patent wars.

A law suit by Apple has prevented the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from being sold in Australia at all."

IE6 Finally Falls Below 10% Mark

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "At 52.81 percent, Internet Explorer has once again hit a new low. IE9, the latest and greatest from Microsoft, last month captured 6.77 percent of the market (up by 1.14 percent percentage points). IE8 lost 0.77 percentage points and fell below the 30 percent mark, but it's still the world's most popular browser. IE7 fell 0.29 percentage points and IE6 fell a whopping 0.94 percentage points. As a result, IE6 is now finally below the 10 percent mark."

No Nemesis: Impact Events Not Periodic->

Submitted by
astroengine
astroengine writes "To find patterns in asteroid and cometary impacts, researchers will collect a ton of data and then run it through some statistical analysis to spot any cycles. In particularly, they will take data from historic impact craters, age them, and then see how the data correlates. Although many studies have been done, each pointing out ebbs and flows in impacts, a researcher from Max Planck Institute for Astronomy thinks he's spotted a flaw in these analyses. It would appear that any perceived cycles in the data are more likely due to statistical error rather than anything real.

As statistical analysis made note of historic "swarms" of comets that careen through the inner solar system after being periodically disturbed by the passage of a distant massive celestial object, like Nemesis, it would appear his work has under-minded the very existence of said object.

"There is a tendency for people to find patterns in nature that do not exist," said MPIA researcher Coryn Bailer-Jones. "Unfortunately, in certain situations traditional statistics plays to that particular weakness."

"From the crater record there is no evidence for Nemesis.""

mlauzon writes "TorrentFreak is reporting that The Pirate Bay has purchased eBay. From the article:

Here’s an announcement we don’t read every day. As of today The Pirate Bay is the proud owner of eBay. The torrent site plans to use eBay technology to code a better rating system for torrents. How much was paid for the auction site is still a mystery.

TorrentFreak talked to one of The Pirate Bay crew members who told us that they had to find a legitimate investment for the billions of dollars they’ve made from annoying pop-under ads, and this appeared to be a decent option."

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"
