Journal pudge's Journal: No NASCAR 10

There will be no NASCAR near me. County and city officials decided it was not a good deal because not only would taxpayers have to pay the bulk of the hundreds of millions to build the new speedway, but the ISC would not even guarantee an annual event. Hooray!

All Republicans are fans of low taxes and government not subsidizing private enterprise ...

I am against public funding for those too.

There are some exceptions. I would favor public funding in the event of a team that means a lot more to a city/state than mere dollars, because of its history, and where the only possible way they could stay there is public funding, and there is overwhelming public support.

In other words, I would treat it more like a state park, something important to the community, to be preserved for the sake of the community. I might do it for the Cubs or Red Sox, but not the
          • Safeco stadium was actually voted down. Twice. I dunno if you were living here yet. Somehow Seattle decided it could do it anyway, and did raise taxes to do it.

I might agree to paying for a staidum if the model was something more like Green Bay.

What if the Seahawks move to another city in 5 years? We weren't even finished paying off the Kingdome they torn down to build Safeco, and now the taxpayers have to pay off 2 stadiums (Kingdome and Safeco) for a football team that isn't even here. It was far t

No, I didn't live here, and I would have voted against it if given the opportunity.

I lived in MA when they built the FleetCenter (Bruins and Celtics) and Foxboro Stadium (Patriots) recently. Both were built with private monies. There is talk of a new place for the Red Sox, and all serious proposals I saw in the past few years were also privately financed operations.

              And this is in Taxachusetts!

I had concernes about NASCAR, but I wasn't entirely against it. I was entirely against public funding, and I w
              • I'm a Wisconsinite and am extremely proud of the the way Lambeau Field reconstruction was handled--they did an amazing job of modernizing with all the amenities, building a beautiful, yet very classic looking outside and yet keeping the most important things that were historically important unchanged. Not to mention, they managed to get it all done on budget, and amazingly without moving a single game to another site. As the smallest city with a pro sports team, plus being owned by stock holders numbering
      • All good Republicans, at any rate.

If only I could convince my libertarian friends that the ones who don't hold to this are the exception rather than the rule, maybe I could get them to quit hating Republicans so much.

I'm a proud Republican, and I don't get NASCAR - to me it's a bunch of guys turning left for 4 hours. That said, how can you not like some of the names of the drivers?

For example - Dick Trickle, who of course never wins, as he's too busy piddling around. Sadly, he doesn't drive the Viagra car. Maybe Cialis will sign him up. Or Enzyte. Or maybe erectile dysfunction drug companies don't want to be associated with a guy whose name sounds like a symptom of an STD?

Mark Martin my favorite angry troll. It used to be so great:

MM: Hi mah nahme is Mahrk Mahtin and I drive for Valovohline. The sahme oil I use in my civilian car.

    Now it sucks.

MM: Hi, I'm Mark Martin and I drive for Viagra cos I can't get it up.
