Journal pudge's Journal: Ask Pudge 35

It's time for Ask Pudge. The rules are simple: Ask me any question. One per person. I reserve the right to refuse to answer if the question is crass or overly personal, or if I come up with some other good reason.

I may not respond immediately, but, rather, queue up my responses.

This discussion was created by pudge (3605) for no Foes, but now has been archived. No new comments can be posted.

  • ...if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

    (in your own words :-)
  • Am I on the black list?
    • I'd like to know this too. Why haven't I seen mod-points for 18 months or so?

      • I would also like to know, although it's only been nine months for me.

I used to metamod regularly, but then when the promises of frequent moderator privileges didn't come true, I lost interest.
    • I'd like to know that also. I don't even know how many years it's been since I had mod points.
    • Same here, haven't ever had mod points on this account, created after my original account was RTBL'ed after the thread of death.
    • Add me to this question as well. About two years and counting with no mode points........

    • Ditto...I don't think I've had mod points in the past two or three years. I don't even think I ever posted in the "thread of death" (or whatever), but maybe michael had his panties in a wad one day (which was every day, really) and just started rtbl'ing right-thinking /.ers.
    • I used to think that I was on the black list. I probably was after the post of death since I modded it up. But for the past few years I have been given mod points any time I go for about a week without visiting /. and then come back. I've just been gone on vacation for a week, so we'll see if I get them tomorrow.
      • That's what I've noticed, too. I usually get mod points on Sunday or Monday, after I haven't touched Slashdot over the weekend. I very rarely get them during the week.

It's like I'm being bribed to come back. :)
  • I don't really understand that part. The "Higher/Lower" / "More/Less" options seem odd to me.
  • In Star Trek TNG, Counselor Troi tells Samuel Clemens that on Earth, poverty was eliminated a long time ago. Clemens' says that in his time men achieved power and wealth by standing on the backs of the poor, and that power was an end to itself. According to Troi, that is no longer the case.

If such a future for humanity isn't worth the tradeoffs in government, economics, and liberty, why not?
    • There may not be poverty, but is there freedom and liberty?

And how did they eliminate poverty? Just redefine the word til nobody met it? Ok, ok, I knkow in ST they have replicators, but the idea of eliminating something by shifting definitions has worked before. In fact, "they" just a few years ago shifted the meaning of, for example, high blood pressure, because "too many" people had gotten themselves down to the "accepted" range. Oops, can't have that! Funding will be cut! Or drug companies won't be
      • I hope you're not suggesting Counselor Troi would be so deceitful, because she wouldn't. I know what you mean about shifting definitions, but the implication from watching ST is that global cooperation really did eliminate poverty. Or were just making a side-point?

Of course the other implications are that in order to eliminate poverty, resources were given to the poor, possibly for free, which implies socialism, unless the whole enterprise is done by churches and private organizations. I suppose that's p
        • Mostly just a side-point. With replicators there's presumably, theoretically, no reason for anybody to be lacking anything they should desire. I'd imagine that would create an entire world afflicted with a heavy case of ennui... but I suppose that's what the space navy is for - to get off world and do something that might actually be interesting and challenging and meaningful.
  • I was watching Fox news last night and Ann Coulter was on. She said the same thing I have thought for a while.

The Republican party will be in power for a certain amount of time, then they will start to appease the Democrats, then they will lose power, then they will wonder WTF happened, then they will gain a backbone and bring back Republican party only to have the cycle continue all over again.

President Bush seems to be trying to appease everyone but is pissing off both sides. Why do they never learn
    • You forgot to include a question mark!

I'd say the more interesting topic is why should the Republicans feel the need to appease the Democrats at all. If the policies work and the people give high approval ratings to Congress and Bush for the legislation passed, the Reps should never need to appease the Dems. The problem is that people have now seen the Republican agenda, and too many of them don't like it.
    • I have the feeling that regardless of the side of the aisle you happen to be on the 'appeasement' maneuver fails to please people who are paying attention. Your own party resents you for selling out and the other knows you're just ejecting chaff until you're re-elected.

Then again, I can think of a couple of wafflers who got back in, so maybe the strategy has something going for it.

  • why is it time to ask pudge?

  • Have you checked out Stryper's Reborn album yet? And as a followup: If so, what did you think?
  • Who'd you like to see as the next Pres & Vice Pres?
  • Why does reading/visiting Slashdot too often reduce the likelihood of getting mod points?

    I'm not complaining, just curious.
    • Well. I'll vouch for that same characteristics... My Karma was in the stratosphere before they went and labeled it a mere 'Excellent.'

So, far I've been doing nothing but metamoderating for the last 30 odd days... Be nice to see some mod points for a change.

      Not that I'm complaining...

Perhaps a new system where mod-point issuances are also taken into consideration of how much NEGATIVE mods as well as positive mods. This way, we can give MORE mod points out... and not break the karma bank.

      With that propose
  • Is Rossi going to run again for Governor? If so, do you think he'll be able to pull it off this time?
  • What did you use to make the whopper theme that showed up on my ipod this morning? That was too funny.

  • How did you choose the username "pudge"? CmdrTaco and Hemos have stories behind theirs, and jamie, Cliff, and timothy are pretty obvious, but what about you? And, if you know, where do Zonk and ScuttleMonkey come from?

And while we're at it, who the heck are HeUnique and vroom?
  • WOW!

Imagine an invite to a local district County Party Committee social...

    Pudge,

Is this more an informal frat, or do I have to bring in my gold bag?
  • Have you heard about the cartoons [google.com] published not too long ago by a marxist University of Oregon student magazine, The Student Insurgent, and what are your thoughts regarding the issue?
  • It's 1995 again, and you have the chance to introduce a concept in the Web's infancy. (Think eBay or Flickr or craigslist, but something other than Slashdot.) What would you have done? (Assume you had then the experience you have now.)

Drilling for oil is boring.
