Previously: Under the rainbow

Sing loud for the sunshine, pray hard for the rain. And show your love for lady nature, and she'll come back again." -Led Zeppelin

"Rainbow?" Linda asked. "That's what she called herself", I said.

"And Charlie set you up??? She hates whores!"

Tami said "Star, Rainbow, who's next, Moon?"

"That's Frank Zappa's daughter, isn't it?" I asked.

"Sunshine!" exclaimed Linda, laughing. "God, get with her and she'll take everythink you have!"

"Sunshine" had taken Ralph for thousands.

She then started getting on my case about letting Charlie crash at my house. The feud between she and Charlie had escalated, in her mind at least. She blamed Charlie for DCFS taking her baby away, and for having Charlie's younger brother who Linda was in love with put back in prison, and had gotten Charlie kicked out of Ralph's. We argued, and I stormed out.

At work the next day the phone rang: Linda, bitching at me. I hung up on her. She'd pissed me off, saying the only way I was getting the money Ralph owed was if I kicked Charlie out. Damned cruel!

After work Charlie wasn't home, so I went to Felber's, and it was hot inside so I went to the beer garden in the back. Nobody was out there but one guy, with two mason jars, one with water and one with cherries. "Want one?" he asked, holding out a cherry.

"Why not?" I ate the cherry and was instantly buzzed. "Wow!" I said. "Moonshine? Don't let the bartender catch you!"

"That's why I'm out here. It's White Lightning. Want a shot?"

I missed dinner. I'm not sure what time I staggered home. On the way there I called Linda: "You're so dead set on Charlie being homeless, well, Ralph's gonna get better and when he does, you'll be homeless. And if he doesn't, you'll STILL be homeless!" and hung up. Not a Christian thing to say, but I was drunk and she'd pissed me off.

The next morning I woke up about fifteen minutes before the alarm went off - Charlie was coming in the front door and the noise woke me up. She'd seen Amy the night before. I told her about how Linda had finnaly dragged me into their war, the war I didn't want to be part of. "Switzerland just declared war on Hitler" I said. "She wanted to drag me into your war, well, she did. Only not on the side she wanted me!"

I asked her to make breakfast while I got ready for work. As I was brushing my teeth, the doorbell rang.

"Who'se there?" I asked Charlie.

"It's your wife!"

My what? I went into the dining room - it was Amy. "Oh, you mean my other wife, huh, wife?"

Amy was worried. She'd taken her boyfriend's car to start a new job she'd gotten, and had gotten drunk instaed of going to work. It had been two days and she still had the car; she was a fraid he was going to have her put in jail.

I assured her that it wouldn't happen; he had loaned her the car, and she was living with him. I told her that when my car had been stolen by the girl who I'd let stay there for a week, the cop said they couldn't charge her; or rather, the State's Attorney wouldn't take it to court, as she'd been living there. And she hadn't had permission to have the car; Amy had gotten her boyfriend's permission to use it.

She went to sleep on Charlie's fold-up bed, Charlie was reading a romance novel, and I went to work.

Yes, but don't you think when she was five her mother said "Moon! Dinnertime!" The only time my mom ever called me "Stephen" was when I was in trouble. Everybody calls me "Steve".
  • How did you manage it anyway? I used to have an old account back in '99 or so, but I've lost track of it.

I emailed help@slashdot.org, described the problem, and let them know what the original email address I had when I registered the account was.

They (actually samzepus) were very good about it. Actually MORE than very good; someone named "welcome back old geezer" bought a subscription for me!

The moon may be smaller than Earth, but it's further away.
