I can't say I fully understand this type of reaction. Being your typical geek/gamer combo, the idea of having my own personal HUD in RL I find to be at the very least intriguing, and potentially awesome. At the same time, I don't particularly care if someone is recording me in public.

The bottom line is, even when people wearing these are recording, you're not the recording. You're scenery at most, obvious exceptions excluded.

I'm a generation behind you (I'm 29), but even when I graduated HS the curriculum had been trimmed down drastically. There were approximately two shop classes, three AP classes, and the rest was only the basic core stuff - a single foreign language (Spanish), biology, algebra, trig, geometry, typing/basic CIS, and a smattering of other subjects.

No psychology, no philosophy, no non-latin foreign languages, no math beyond pre-calculus (which was what we had labeled as AP Calculus), and even chemistry was missing from the curriculum. Granted, it's a school in a poor rural area, but there are a lot of poor rural areas in the US.

Words can't express how far behind I felt when I finally hit university, despite graduating at the top of my class in HS with the most difficult curriculum I was able to piece together from the meager offerings.

Education is heavily touted during election season, but unfortunately it's the first thing sent to the chopping block when budgets are tight.

I'm in the same boat. I've been using Gnome3 full time for about a year now as well and I'm very happy with it. Want to open something? Press the Win key, type a name, press enter. Viola - I now have (Insert application here) looking at me. Alt-Tab and Alt-~ are mainstays. Switching between virtual desktops is just a Ctrl-Alt-Up or Ctrl-Alt-Down away. I understand the complaints about the lack of customizabilty, as it's sorely lacking; the few extensions I've used have tended to be somewhat buggy as well.But if you're a keyboard user you should feel right at home with Gnome3.

Rumour is the Hollywool movie will be coming to cinemas in 2013 or 2014. With Fifty Shades of Grey and now Wool getting the attention of Hollywood, it's clear the self-publishing revolution is here to stay."

+ - Researchers generate electricity from viruses->

Submitted by toomuchtogrok
toomuchtogrok writes "Imagine charging your phone as you walk, thanks to a paper-thin generator embedded in the sole of your shoe. This futuristic scenario is now a little closer to reality. Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have developed a way to generate power using harmless viruses that convert mechanical energy into electricity. The scientists tested their approach by creating a generator that produces enough current to operate a small liquid-crystal display. It works by tapping a finger on a postage stamp-sized electrode coated with specially engineered viruses. The viruses convert the force of the tap into an electric charge."

Track rides can be amazing, however. One of my favorite games (well, series) of all time is the Longest Journey / Dreamfall. It's completely on rails, but the stories are amazing it feels more like watching an interactive movie than playing a game.

In comparison, I don't think the game would have felt so tightly engaging if it was presented with the same level of freedom you have in games like GTA and Skyrim.

The hate isn't completely unfounded. I really enjoy the look of 4.x, but every single version I've tried (4.1-4.7) has had stability problems. On three different machines, all of which have didn't have nearly as many issues with KDE 3.x, Gnome 2.x/3.x, XFCE, etc.

I'll gladly make it my preferred DE once it's safe to use on a primary machine, but until then, I'll stick with the feature-lacking Gnome 3.x.
