Seriously, what was up with $$$$$exyGal?

I suppose I have to give a little bit of my perspective here first. I'm female, and I make that pretty clear in my posts. Yet I still get the "ARE YOU REALLY FEMALE OMG?!?" posts and the "CAN I HAVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER? R U HOT?!!!" posts as well.

Having said that, I found it interesting to watch the battle going on about whether $$$$$exyGal was really a female.

Slashdotters, who are overwhelmingly male, are fascinated with females, and especially ones who tend to be geeky and post on Slashdot. For one thing, there aren't that many geeky females, and for another, I think geeky guys are interested in how things work, and many of you just can't figure out the female psyche... (not like it's really your fault... we can be weird and moody.) I followed the battle with great interest because there were so many heated opinions on both sides... when there were very few people who could possibly know the truth.

So, being the token Slashdot female, I suppose it's now time to reveal what I know and don't know about $$$$$exyGal. Like all of you, I don't know the truth, but I can take educated guesses. Here's what I pieced together:

  • As mentioned in my previous Slashdot comment, ekrout's latest account (that I know of) is Amsterdam Vallon. ekrout apparently "lost" his account password; that is, someone most likely hacked in and changed it. Whoever you are, I applaud you. I find ekrout just as annoying as most of you do.
  • However, "Amsterdam Vallon" (ugh... I hate even typing out that name) hasn't posted much lately... is ekrout finally moving on to other things (mercifully), or did he create another account? I'm currently on the lookout...
  • Anyway, some of you seem to think that ekrout and SexyGal are the same person. I don't agree. I think she tended to use some of his techniques, but I think there were enough differences, especially in the language used, to make them two separate people.
  • The million-dollar question: Is SexyGal female? My answer: most likely. (Honestly, that's about as close to the truth as pretty much all of us are going to get at this point.) Some of the comments she made, and the way she said things, made me picture a female saying them (or else a really, really gay guy.) For instance, in this comment, she says "Yay burritos!" That's something I would say, or my friend Amy would say. Sure, you could fake this as a guy, but she pulled it off pretty successfully every time. To me, this fits a profile similar to mine and Amy's: a super-cool, spunky, geek chick. Am I 100% sure? No. I'm sure there are plenty of guys out there who could pull this off... but I think only a geek chick could pull it off as well as $$$$$exyGal did.
  • I think this journal entry (and probably this person's entire user account as well) is complete bullshit. I have serious doubts that this guy actually ran a piece of OS X software that turned out to be some mystery webcam showing $$$$$exyGal. If she wanted to show herself, why not just set up a regular webcam? Hell, I have one that I used to turn on every night. I think you'd have to be pretty gullible to believe that guy's story.

Anyway, apparently $$$$$exyGal has now called it quits, so the mystery remains open. Personally, I think she did the right thing by stopping there. Some of you (and you know who you were) were getting pretty obnoxious about her gender, and she already had more fans than anyone else... there wasn't much left to accomplish with that user account.

$$$$$exyGal, whoever you are, male or female, ekrout or someone else, you made Slashdot interesting again. And--if you were really female--you completely beat me in the "most well-known/popular Slashdot female" contest. What you did was impressive, and you should be proud of it (even if most of your popularity was due to the porn links.)

  • and on the topic of gender, why not vote "all of the above" and go with shim... part she, part him, it's a shim. Think of it like the generic term for Pat on SNL.
  • I dont think it was the porn that attracted all of $$$exyGal's fans (well, maybe the fact that they were supplied by a geekchick). but really, anybody computer literate enough to read slashdot knows how to find lots of free porn on the internet. If people were making her a friend for the links, I think it was for the funny ones, which she stopped posting because she thought the porn would be more popular.
    I dont know about anyone else out there, but I dont just go to slashdot to jack off.

  • She might of done it in an attempt to not have to disclose IP address to stay anonymous, Though most slashdot readers should know how to run tcpdump.

    I'm not familure with MacOS X, Maybe there just isnt a lot of good realtime video+audio streaming conferencing software?

  • I'd suggest that most of her fans couldn't give a flying fuck if she was really female. I, personally, just wanted to make it so that

    1) I could +5 her comments, and
    2) I could read her journal.

    This is the same reason I befriend anyone. They say less dumb things than the rest of /.

    It reminds me a little of guys that flip out when someone suggests that they are homosexual. Who gives a fuck if someone thinks you're gay? Why on Earth did $$$$$exy get so caught up in proving she was female? That was the least
    • I have a couple things to say about $$$$$exyGal.

      1) I agree that the anti$$$$$exyGal thing was bullshit

      2) While her porn links started off being pretty cool, they definitely went downhill towards the end. At the end, the just plain sucked. Not only were there no funny links, the porn sucked too.

      3) While her comments were originally insightful/funny, they too went downhill, to the point where the constant fan-whoring got downright annoying and aggravating.

      I started seeing $$$$$exyGal's posts in slashdot, and I thought "wow, what some people will do for attention...". Not to judge her/him, but as far as I'm concerned, spending time creating porn links to get "fans" is pretty sad (but also a bit funny at the same time). No, I didn't browse the links, but out of curiousity I did check out the JE once and found it pretty disgusting.

    I'm sorry, I don't see it. I can't imagine someone that flamboyant in the manner Gal is to be female. OTOH, I don't care, at all.
  • It's a little weird. I've caught some of the posts, I always thought she was a girl. I saw the porn links and thought, 'is that what a girl has to do to get friends around here?' That's not for me. When I saw someone say it was really a guy, I didn't buy it based on the tone of her posts. But anyway, this fan stuff. I never really thought about it for myself. I hardly make any journal entries. I seem to get mod points at least once a week, and metamod almost every day, once 3 times in a day - enoug

    Heh. I totally agree. In fact, I can't figure out the female psyche much better than my male friends. Hm. Maybe it's part of that analytical-geeky mind.
  • The reason was on that she was a female, though (which I assumed then and still do), but that she had _attitude_. I liked reading her posts so I made sure they were highlighted when I was reading.

    Does it really have to be any more complicated?
  • 1) I won't take credit for getting rid of $$$$exyGal, although there are those who would give me credit. I'm sure 'she' left of 'her' own accord.
    2) Don't worry, SlashChick, I couldn't care less whether you're female or not, just like it didn't matter whether or not $$$$exyGal was a guy or not, what mattered is that $$$$exyGal was fan whore, and the only other fan whore was ekrout, and well, I just can't stand ekrout or fan whoring.
    3) "YAY! BURRITOS!" --> I gotta say, that's a very chick thing to say.
  • I think that there are a lot of people who crave attention and don't know how to find it. I think that a lot of women "solve" such a problem by relying on sex, sexiness, or some reasonable facsimile [in their minds.] And I would not, at all, be suprised if that was the case here. I never doubted that $$$$$exyGal was female, and I kinda suspected that she felt the best way to be heard in such a forum as this [slashdot.org] (I bet heliocentric hasn't seen this poll-- and I wonder how much the numbers would change if it w
  • I wasn't a fan of $^4exy Gal because I thought her nick looked like a spam subject heading or a lame ebay posting. Superficial? Yes. But she also seemed to be a fan whore, so I put 2+2 together and came up with "Meh."

    As to women getting hit on or treated differently on /., I can't say that I've ever experienced that myself. But then, my nick is relatively androgynous and anyone who bothers to find out my sex will probably also see that I'm married.
