Journal Saige's Journal: A Lot Can Change in 24 Hours... 8

Just yesterday, I was all worried about how badly my phone interview went since I was sick, and not thinking clearly enough to put it off until I was well. That was yesterday.

After a nice Japanese dinner (Japanese food always makes me happy - miso and tekka don and red bean ice cream is great stuff), I got back, and before diving into some retrogaming on MAME, checked my e-mail. Lo and behold, an e-mail from a recruiter at a certain enormous software company located convienently in the vicinity of the city that I've decided I want to relocate to, there in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Not just an e-mail, though, but one asking me to give them my top five choices of dates to fly me out there for interviews. Interviews. In person. And not with the person I talked to yesterday, either. People in groups that I haven't even talked to, people that I don't even know what groups/projects they're involved with.

Needless to say, I've been in quite the happy happy joy joy mood all evening. That is, of course, after I stopped hyperventilating and twitching in complete and utter excitement.

I might still make it out of here by the holidays. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, but when they want to fly me out without even talking to me on the phone, well, they saw something they liked!

Anyways, I'm excited. Don't know when I'm flying out, but should be soon...

  • Congratulations. There's something about that feeling that you get from knowing that someone wants you to work for them. This is just the first stage, of course, but it looks like a very positive response. Way to go!
    • Well, I've been doing phone interviews with others from there for a while, so getting flown out for face-to-face interviews is definitely beyond the first step! Last time I was flown somewhere for interviews, I had two offers waiting for me the next day. I can only hope that happens this time...
      • I've always thought that, if they're willing to spring for a trip, then they are likely going to come up with an offer if they don't uncover any problems.

Your sig reminds me of a book called God Stalk, by P.C. Hodgell. One of my two or three favorite fantasy books. You would probably like it. It's hard to find, though. It's the first of a trilogy, and I've seen it in an omnibus called Dark of the Gods with the second book, Dark of the Moon (IMHO, not as good as the first). I think that all three ha

  • I am one of the guys that authorizes that people can be flown across the country for an interview. Obviously, you're not coming to my company, so I can be frank.

You've been recommended for hire by the person who hit the pavement to fill this position. That is usually not the person (nor the level) that can hire for the position. These coporate knights are usually techincally well-qualified to make the judgement, but lack the confidence of the corporate officers, usually through no fault of their own, bu

You're going to interview with the "devil" (I know this is Slashdot, but I simply cannot figure out where to put the dollar-signs in "devil"). Fight the system from within, take them down one man, woman or child at a time?

Just kidding, I have no ethics. I think that both arms manufacturers and tobacco companies are swell employers as long as the pay is all right and the job itself does not suck. Good luck with your interview at that "certain enormous software company". Having never been in a formal intervi
