The option remains open to, for example, purchase Jolla...
Pun not intended...but that boat has sailed at least for Nokia. Nokia might be free of the shackles of Microsoft, but who is lest to care. Elops misguided 1:1 conversion from symbian to Windows Phone strategy when its company was twice the size of Apple and four times the size of Microsoft and growing has failed. it is not even in the top 10 of phone manufactures. Its brand irreparably tarnished.
Elop is his desire to sell Nokia to Microsoft for Millions in his own pocket has cost Nokia billions, has cost tens of thousands of employees jobs(some still to go), manufacturing worldwide(Luminas are simply another third party Chinese phone), even its headquarters has been sold off. Its carrier connections destroyed though Its infrastructure is simply none existent. What is left is not a phone company...just another patent troll(I know they own more) waiting for a big buyout.
I wish Jolla all the best, but for any success anyone e.g. Intel, Lenovo, Facebook all would be better choices. Nokia is simply not a contender.
...the lumia hardware has been nothing short of spectacular....
Except it wasn't. At launch it had a distinctive look(Like the N9), but the hardware failed to capitalise on Nokia technology...because it wasn't built by Nokia. It was part of Elops move to a more Apple model...or Designed in Finland(by Microsoft!?). High end camera technology simply ignored, keyboards simply not an option, and hardware dictated to by Microsoft. The fact that early models not upgradeable, due (in part) to their weak specification is simply more petrol on the burning platform that is Windows Phone.
In fact the only place the phones make sense was right at the low end of the market...which is where they did sell some in the western world, and then failed to capitalise(simply where not interested in!?) on it before the rise of the Motorola G...Project Svelte...Motorola E...Android One...Blah Blah Blah
I don't like the posting of netmarketshare as gospel especially when they adjust their data, but quoting wikipedia as a measure is simply spinning figures in a "I don't even give a fuck about reality way" A quick look at statcounter shows firefox usage slightly down http://gs.statcounter.com/#bro... and at 18%. Netshare shows firefox slightly down at http://marketshare.hitslink.co... as 15%. Not a million miles from each other, but the trends basically show firefox usage is pretty flat. Even these figures are less of a reflection of how badly firefox is doing, but how well chrome is.
I noticed this comment had got a five early on...basing on assumptions that the big powerful USA has all the money its smartphone ownership percentage should be highest, I find this astonishing.
The link at the bottom is linked to(Slashdot will not accept a direct link) to Googles amazing tool where TNS have released their survey data on 54 countries and ownership of smartphones, and guess what USA is only the 19th country of percentage of smartphone ownership per person, drawing with Canada. India is already at 7%, and that is without phones dropping to $30; Google is targeting India with the Android One(A reference phone) at cheaper than Motorola E prices. India already has 7% smartphones that is 85.9 Million smartphone owners(Looks Like A billion mobile users realistic)...to put that in perspective the USA has only 148.5 Million.
Tomi provides unnecessary commentary to this data. The http://communities-dominate.bl...
The ignorance of American people on the world is astonishing.
No it didn't. Android did. GNU/Linux is still pretty irrelevant outside of cheap servers
I beg to differ. It even has the largest growth in under $300 laptops. https://www.google.com/chrome/...
You seem to bogged down some crazy definition. When whether you are using a chromebook, an Android phone, or Ubuntu/Debian you have a shitload of companies like Samsuing and Google who now as of 2013 are top ten contributers to Linux.
Get over it Linux won. It is why Microsoft is irrelevant outside the Desktop xxx
And THAT pretty much sums up what has always held Linux back (and probably always will).
Except this is not really a problem with the exception of Slackware and Gentoo two obvious holdouts
all these distros use systemd - Arch Linux, CoreOS, Debian GNU/Linux(Default for Debian 8 "jessie"),Fedora, Frugalware Linux, Mageia, NixOS, openSUSE,
Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Sabayon, Ubuntu(Coming). The deal is done.
Oh FYI Linux overtook windows back in 2013 is quite well know.
BD also cost more per-GB than a HDD.
fifty "25GB 4x BD-R Hard Coating" for $35 about 1250GB about 36GB a $
A 3TB drive (I would say the sweet spot) would be $100 about 30GB to a $
So blue ray is slightly cheaper per GB for me. I suspect in bulk the differences are bigger.
Sorry google, you missed the bus on the music thing.
Except the reverse is true. Music subscriptions are not on most peoples radar. Google hold a dominant position in the largest OS in the world on the most popular music devices in the world, and ownes the largest (Music) Video Site (in fact that is the whole point about the indie artist dispute) on the most used music player in the world. It is a market of few large players, and a large player like Google is eg. Microsoft with Xbox.
The only real question is how do they do it without bringing into question antitrust concerns.
at least it wasn't designed by Google's interface guys. *shudder*
...are you kidding me. Chrome the desktop version has become the one to follow even by Firefox own incredible debut, but its mobile interface it truly a thing of great beauty. In fact the reality is Google bland web page interface is one of the reasons it became a dominate search engine. Even their older interfaces are functional I bought a clone of the now retired "News & Weather" app simply because it was so useful. The only exceptions are the surprisingly awful Finance Application on Android and the Images Google mobile version which is missing basic functionality...but these are exceptions to the rule.
What, ad revenue wasn't enough?
Personally I have been baffled why Google hasn't heavily promoted its own sales of songs on youtube over that of itunes. That said I cannot help but think that Google is better company for not relying on Advertising Revenue alone...in fact it has been reducing it for some time.
An Ada exception is when a routine gets in trouble and says 'Beam me up, Scotty'.
