Submission + - Wisconsin Begins Using Cheese to De-Ice Their Roads 1

Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes: The NYT reports that Milwaukee has begun a pilot program to use cheese brine to keep city roads from freezing, mixing the dairy waste with traditional rock salt as a way to trim costs and ease pollution. “You want to use provolone or mozzarella,” says Jeffrey A. Tews, the fleet operations manager for the public works department, which has spread the cheesy substance in Bay View, a neighborhood on Milwaukee’s south side. “Those have the best salt content. You have to do practically nothing to it.” Local governments across the country have been experimenting with cheaper and environmentally friendly ways of thawing icy thoroughfares, trying everything from sugar beet juice to discarded brewery grain in an attempt to limit the use of road salt, which can spread too thin, wash away and pollute waterways. “If you put dry salt on a roadway, you typically lose 30 percent to bounce and traffic,” says Emil Norby, who works for Polk County and was the first in Wisconsin to come up with the cheese brine idea to help the salt stick. In a state where lawmakers once honored the bacterium in Monterey Jack as the state’s official microbe, residents of Bay View say they have noticed little difference, good or bad, in the smell of their streets, and city officials say they have received no complaints. The mayor of Bay View says it's an experiment, but one that makes sense. The brine will come from the Dresser Farm in Polk County, where it is already being used on the roads. The only cost will be for transportation and distribution. "We thought, 'Well, let's give it a shot.' The investment in this project is $1,474."

Pachter? Is that you?

All kidding aside, I've never understood this seething hatred that so-called "hardcore gamers" exhibit towards Nintendo and its products. Regardless of anything Nintendo does, their detractors feel the need to get on the Internet and rage about "It's all kiddie games!" or "The graphics suck!" or, in this case, "The 3D sucks!" and these tirades are always accompanied by predictions of Nintendo's impending bankruptcy. Ironically, it's always struck me as a bit childish.

Back on topic, I haven't gotten a 3DS yet for one reason: The lack of must-have games.

And on that subject, what system since the Super NES had a really compelling launch lineup? I honestly can't think of one.

especially with their most recent round of egregious bullshit, but does anyone actually use Buzz? I was messing around with it earlier today, and it seems a lot less annoying than Facebook; I just don't think I know ANYONE that uses it. Maybe it's just still too new? It's hard to say, but the way FB does things is getting more ridiculous all the time.

Wii 2 Delay Is Hurting Nintendo 310

BanjoTed writes "Michael Pachter's ongoing spat with Nintendo regarding the Wii 2 is well documented. Pachter is sure it's coming, Nintendo says it's not. Now the analyst has gone one further by claiming that the declining sales of the Wii documented in the platform holder's recent financial statements will only get worse unless it speeds up attempts to get its successor to market. He said, 'The reason for this is clear: the software being created is just not interesting enough or compelling enough to drive Wii owners to buy more than two [games] per year, and most of those purchases are first party software. We can blame the third party publishers for making shovelware, or for misjudging the Wii market, but the simple fact is that the publishers have to develop completely separate games for the Wii because its CPU is not powerful.'"

Apple Orders 10 Million Tablets? 221

Arvisp writes "According to a blog post by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, Apple plans to produce nearly 10 million tablets in the still-unannounced product's first year. If Lee's blog post is to be believed, Apple plans to sell nearly twice as many tablets as it did iPhones in the product's first year."

That's not the "medicine" part, that's hand holding.

It's usually called bedside manner, and it's very important to a very large number of people. To some people, it's the most important quality they look for in a doctor (especially parents looking for a pediatrician). Getting defensive and being a dick about it won't change that and doesn't really contribute to the discussion at all, and I'm a bit surprised that your comment was modded Interesting (which you usually are, but not this time). Retorting with one-word answers is pretty lame, especially for someone who needs to make compelling arguments on a regular basis in his line of work. You might just be taking the "lawyers and patients" snip a bit too much to heart.

You missed the part where the poster logs IPs. If a hiring manager goes looking into shit that has no relevance to the position applied for, and then uses that as a basis for not hiring someone, then the employer is guilty of discrimination. Not that I'd expect a corporate suit to understand that.

All they have to say is that they didn't hire you based on

This is an excellent example of how employers circumvent discrimination laws. "No, it wasn't discrimination, it was...er...some other reason. Honest!" Thanks for that.
