RMS On Header Files and Derivative Works 247

tomhudson writes "In this email from 2003, Richard Stallman says 'I've talked with our lawyer about one specific issue that you raised: that of using simple material from header files. Someone recently made the claim that including a header file always makes a derivative work. That's not the FSF's view. Our view is that just using structure definitions, typedefs, enumeration constants, macros with simple bodies, etc., is NOT enough to make a derivative work. It would take a substantial amount of code (coming from inline functions or macros with substantial bodies) to do that.' This should help end the recent FUD about the Android 'clean headers.'"

How Chrysler's Battery-Less Hybrid Minivan Works 347

thecarchik writes "Chrysler announced Wednesday that it would partner with the US Environmental Protection Agency to build and test prototypes of a different kind of hybrid vehicle, one that accumulates energy not in a battery pack but by compressing a gas hydraulically. The system in question, originally developed at the EPA labs, uses engine overrun torque to capture otherwise wasted energy, as do conventional hybrid-electric vehicles. The engine is Chrysler's standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder, the base engine in its minivan line. But rather than turning a generator, that torque powers a pump that uses hydraulic fluid to increase the pressure inside a 14.4-gallon tank of nitrogen gas, known as a high-pressure accumulator."

US Spends $11M To Kick-Start Video Search 67

coondoggie writes "The US military is inundated with video from airborne unmanned aircraft, remote monitoring systems and security outposts. In an effort to speed up the processing and analyzing of all this video, researchers at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) this week awarded an almost $11 million contract to open source software vendor Kitware to help develop what DARPA calls its Video and Image Retrieval and Analysis Tool (VIRAT) program."

First 'Malaria-Proof' Mosquito Created 261

Gisg writes "The University of Arizona team reported that their genetically modified mosquitoes are immune to the malaria-causing parasite, a single-cell organism called Plasmodium. Riehle and his colleagues tested their genetically-altered mosquitoes by feeding them malaria-infested blood. Not even one mosquito became infected with the malaria parasite."

In my rural area I have access to 13 million acres of mostly wild fedral forest and many thousands of private forest (large corporation) within an hours drive, there are some ~10s of thousands of people in the greater (tri - village) area and a good number of these people choose to live in an extreme or often times 'off grid' or at least power only (no TV, well water, some have phone, no garbage, no city services like plowing). we are in a medium growth forest mountainous area so there is NO line of sight for well over half of that population, there is really no hope of getting them all high speed internet access, but I'm not sure that they would even want it.

The Guage system is completely intuitive (disclaimer, I shoot black powder smoothbore shotguns) 20 perfect*(pretty good) spheres of lead weighing 1 pound is a 20 guage shotgun. 12 perfect spheres of lead weighing 1 pound is a 12 guage shotgun.

They had acurate balance scales, but not acurate rulers. How would you solve this problem with no digital micrometer in sight.

50% Efficiency Boost From New Fuel Injection System 379

chudnall notes a Technology Review story on a new gas engine injection system that promises increased efficiency of up to 50%. "The key is heating and pressurizing gasoline before injecting it into the combustion chamber, says Mike Rocke, Transonic's vice president of business development. This puts it into a supercritical state that allows for very fast and clean combustion, which in turn decreases the amount of fuel needed to propel a vehicle. The company also treats the gasoline with a catalyst that 'activates' it, partially oxidizing it to enhance combustion."

I bake bread as a hobby, I'd love to be able to program my high end steam oven to

baugette mode recipe
preheat - bake with convection fan on and 100% duty cycle steam at 500 degrees.
insert bread,
2nd step - stop convection fan, wait 5 minutes, reduce steam cycle to 50%, reduce oven temp to 400

etc etc, it would be different for chibatta, or brioche.
