One of the analogies I've seen at a speech on the subject went something like, "A computer can detect an object in the roadway, but it can't yet tell if it's a paper bag that can be safely run over or a rock that's apt to damage the car."

Or even harder, the difference between a running child and a running dog. While I'd much prefer not to hit either, the value judgement leans only one way.
Another sticking point: A traffic cop in the street directing traffic, vs some dude walking across the street.

do need to be worked out.

One of these things operated by some idiot, flying it where he shouldn't, is going to go down the intake of an airliner. Obviously you shouldn't fly them where this might be a possibility. Hence the FAA rules. But some fool will.
Just like laser pointers. 'Toys', right?.Obviously you should not point them at aircraft. Yet asshats still do it. On purpose.

Put a bunch of numbers on a dartboard, from $50 to $250. Throw a dart. Whatever it hits...thats it. Trying to determine a ticket price for a service that may or may not exist 15 years from now is, as said in the article, "spitballing".

What will happen to gas and airline prices between now and then? Will elec cars be more prevalent? What cost multiplier will be applied to actually building the thing?
More importantly...will it actually get built? What rare riparian environment will be discovered in the proposed path, that will cause it to be tied up in enviro court for years? Or in NIMBY court?

I came to say the same thing. How awesome would it be to be at the beach, realize you forgot a towel, and have one drop in within a half hour...

If you are at some remote beach and you forget your towel...you are outside of the delivery zone. And you are a dumbass, and the ghost of Douglas Adams will smite you.
