BWJones writes: "Many non-photographers and even photographers, particularly the working professional photographers are accustomed to looking down their nose at cell phones as cameras, but if you look at the market, all of the innovation in photography has been happening with smart phones in the last couple of years. Sure, camera sensors have gotten better and less noisy, but convergent technologies are primarily happening in the smart phone market, not the camera market. On top of that, statistics show that the most common cameras are now cell phone cameras, the iPhone in particular. Flickr reports that as of this posting, the Apple iPhone 4s is the most popular camera in the Flickr Community. If you add in the iPhone 4 and then the large upswing in the newly available iPhone 5 and the now waning iPhone 3GS, you have in the iPhone platform a huge lead in the number of cameras people are using to post to Flickr."

Yeah, that must be it. I just have one question - if the female connector has 4 pins on both sides and the male connector has 4 pins on one side and a big honking metal shell on the other, then how do you avoid shorting out those 4 pins in the female connector with the shell of the male connector?

Huh? I think he means the female connector will have 4 sockets on both sides, what with it being a female connector, and all. Then it doesn't matter which way you plug in the male connector, since the for pins on the male connector will always go into one of the two duplicate sets of four sockets on the female connector.

Yes, but don't worry: that massive amount of info they're collecting on you as part of HSPD-12[*] is perfectly safe.

[*] Where NASA said we all had to submit to unrestricted background investigations -- where they could gather any data they wanted on you, from any source, whether it be your doctor, your lawyer, your priest, your ISP, or whatever -- and then a secret, unappealable tribunal would decide if we could keep our jobs. I and others sued them over this, and lost. But don't worry, we can all see that NASA keeps careful track of sensitive information.

Mozilla's Jet Villegas writes, 'Shumway is an experimental web-native (Javascript) runtime implementation of the SWF file format. It is developed as a free and open source project sponsored by Mozilla Research. The project has two main goals: 1. Advance the open web platform to securely process rich media formats that were previously only available in closed and proprietary implementations. 2. Offer a runtime processor for SWF and other rich media formats on platforms for which runtime implementations are not available.'" See also: Gnash and Lightspark.

Cockatoo Manufactures, Uses Tools 75

grrlscientist writes with news of a cockatoo named Figaro, who was observed to construct and use his own tools to retrieve objects that were outside of his cage. Quoting: "One day, a student caregiver noticed Figaro pushing a stone pebble through the aviary wire mesh, where it fell on a wood structural beam. Unable to retrieve the stone with his foot, Figaro then fetched a piece of bamboo and again attempted to retrieve the stone using the bamboo stick. ... During the next three days, the researchers ran trials of the original scenario, which was repeated ten times but substituting a cashew nut for the pebble. All trials were captured on video and the process of tool manufacture and use was documented photographically. ... 'Figaro made a new tool for every nut we placed there and each time the bird was successful in obtaining it,' reports cognitive biologist Alice Auersperg of the University of Vienna, who led the study (PDF). During these trials, Figaro used 10 tools, nine of which he manufactured and one of which was ready-made."

I dunno, Einstein's theory seems to be pretty useful for explaining and predicting a lot of things we experience. It explains everything Newton does, plus some things tat Newton can not. What things does Popper predict accurately that Einstein does not? In what ways is his theory simpler and more elegant than Special and General Relativity?
