Comment Ever Heard of an Alsatian Wolf Dog? (Score 1) 323

It's what we commonly refer to as a German Shepherd -- but after WWI, the notion of "German" anything was so reviled that they started calling German Shepherds Alsatians. It was this bias, hatred and on-going punitive measures against Germany post WWI that helped bring Hitler to power. With that in mind, I can only imagine what global menace shall be unleashed after renaming French Fries to Freedom Fries.

Comment Ruby dying? (Score 1) 547

FFS -- what a crock of shit. I personally don't recommend Ruby to clients any more in favor of NodeJS, but there's still plenty of startups going with Ruby. A hell of a lot more than Perl. But with that said, if it were up to me I'd happily see Perl and PHP die. While Perl is definitely a dying language, PHP seems to be holding on -- with nasty frameworks like Yii (which feature views where anything goes) gaining popularity.

Comment Ponch vs Siri (Score 1) 208

Siri, as usual was giving me confusing and last second directions saying "Turn Left", in a very confusing series of intersections in Oakland where it looked like she was wrong (and was of course). However, while looking around trying to read street signs, the light turned red just as I got to the intersection, and I was still at about 40mph, after having just got off the Freeway. So, I figured it would be safer to run the light than slam on the brakes and risk stopping in the middle of the intersection. Immediately I saw flashing red lights, I pulled over and apologized to the CHP Officer while handing him my papers, explaining the situation with Siri and the light etc and you know what? He came back, handed me back my papers and said he decided to give me a break on the ticket and let me go. Thanks Ponch! Seems the California Highway Patrol is all to familiar with how much a distraction Siri can be. And what the fuck is up with her 10 mile warning! Two mile I can understand, but 10? Fucking annoying.

Comment Awesome Concept (Score 1, Insightful) 63

This is a freaking fantastic piece of tech -- but it really needs to be given a much larger budget and a better design team to make this something the masses would wear. But for a prototype, it's just fine. Hopefully someone with the design sense of Apple will buy them and take this to the next level. Other applications like a Personal Assistant or Scout would be great add-ons for usage as well.

Comment Not Humanly Possible != Impracticle (Score 2) 470

I remember seeing something a few years back that made the case that Ship to Ship space battles would be fought by AI Drones. Due to the extreme 3D maneuverability of small craft with thrusters , humans wouldn't stand a chance against machines capable of making advanced tactical calculations in milliseconds. Whether or not projectiles would trump high powered energy weapons would depend on the sorts of shielding and materials in use to create spacecraft with. However, a rapid fire rail gun does seem like it would be ideal for close quarters combat and require less energy to penetrate shielding and armor. But perhaps more exotic ammo than slugs would be more useful, imagine a round that on impact would release rapidly replicating nano-bots that eat through the ship's hull until there was no ship or deliver an EMP to disable the systems.
