Allen, who co-founded Microsoft Corp., sued 11 companies including Google Inc., Apple Inc. and EBay Inc., saying they infringed patents on Web-based technology. AOL Inc., Facebook Inc., Netflix Inc., Office Depot Inc., OfficeMax Inc., Staples Inc., Yahoo! Inc. and Google’s YouTube were also named, according to a statement today from Allen’s Interval Licensing LLC. Interval Licensing owns the patents of a defunct computer science and communications research company Allen and David Liddle founded in 1992, according to the statement.

tekrat writes: Yesterday, news of master Japanese animator Satoshi Kon's death started circulating wildly. It came as a shock because, first, Kon was only 47 years old and, secondly, because nobody could confirm what was then thought to be a rumor. The news started after two people had mentioned Kon's passing, though those two people are trustworthy members of the anime industry: the President of Madhouse Studios (Mindgame) and one of the founding members of Gainax (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Now it has been confirmed that Kon has passed away. He died of cancer.

Here's a guy that decided to modify the case to his new bluetooth optical mouse, and house it in something much more classy — a SUN type 3 optical mouse. Now all he needs to do is modify the keyboard as well. Not only is the link a decent hardware hack, it shows a bit of computing history as well. That optical mouse with the bright red LED in it you're using right now was invented before most of the people reading this story were born!"

tekrat writes: "The ZENN all-electric car, manufactured by a Canadian company is going to be powered, not by batteries, but by a new type of ultracapacitor created by EEStor of Austin Texas. What's unique about this is that their claims about the storage capacity and the recharge ability of their product could make regular batteries obsolete (9 minute recharge time, provides 52 kilowatt-hours, sustaining a million charge/discharge cycles before needing replacement). Although the ZENN (Zero Emission No Noise) car is a low-speed neighborbood grocery-getter, it's obvious that EEStor is looking to create a storage system using their technology (patent application US 20040071944A1) for an all-electric high-speed car that could free many economies from fossil fuels. EEStor seems to be on to something here — even if their product does 50% of what they claim, it's pretty revolutionary and could potentially change the world."
