Journal Journal: on girls calling each other guys 19

Seems like girls, or women, call each other guys partly because it sounds abnormal to use the word "girls" instead. Saying "girls" would draw unnecessary attention to the distinction. Presumably they don't mean anything sexist in using the word guys, but does it subtly reinforce the concept that males are dominant? Or is it really just a generic "you all" word? I'd rather see groups of women refer to themselves as girls, just like men say guys.

Journal Journal: slashcode changed?

I hate the champagne IT scheme, so for months I've low-techly just deleted "it." from http://it.slashdot.org... and hit Enter. Same article, with the fugly gone and replaced by green.

Well that isn't working today. WTF? Why does that part of slashcode get changed, but I still can't search worth a damn? No I don't want to use the Light version of /. What I want is an extension for Firefox that will render the colors how I want for each "it." or "games." and ignore /.'s dumb colors. Or at it's simplest, the extension should just render everything with the default green. Unfortunately I don't know enough to make it myself.

If lowering taxes stimulates the economy, but 0% taxes results in $0 income for the government, how much should taxes be cut, and why?

Journal Journal: The Case For Defriending cyranoVR 58

The journal entry that prompted this.

Certainly our journals are our own and nobody is required to read them. If they don't like what they read they can go elsewhere. That doesn't mean we need to support rude behavior. cyranoVR wrote three JE's of "Rulings" then explained he couldn't be bother to reply to most of the questions and criticisms because "Arguing about politics or "philosophy" (more accurately described as "ethics") is a waste of time, in my opinion, online."

Now he has used his forum to spread his wife's mistaken thoughts about Technolust's life and situation. Again CVR (and his wife) have provoked the journal group and those who have friended him, but without the civility to explain their positions to those who reply.

Well if I wanted to hear someone who isn't interested in actually discussing the issues he raises, I'd listen to Michael Savage, but I'm not and I don't. So I've defriended cyranoVR and I encourage you to do the same.

Journal Journal: how should immigrants mix? A+B+C=D, or A? 6

Not sure if this subject has gotten it's turn in the circle yet.

Frankly I'm not sure there's much to say. Because immigrants are a small population of the population, their numbers don't make sense to say A+B+C=D because culture C is too small compared to A. Meanwhile immigrants don't like hearing A+B+C=A because that implies they have to give up their culture.

I think it's more like cultures are ingredients in a stew. Adding another culture in small amounts will bring a new flavor to the whole, but it will still remain stew, and the ingredient will still have to cook and become part of it. Immigrants shouldn't get to remain their own separate side dish because this country is supposed to be a unified whole.

So while Democrats want the immigrant vote too much to tell them to learn English and integrate, I bet privately a majority of Dems feel that way.

Journal Journal: key commands to move over and down in iTunes? 6

I know iTunes isn't a spreadsheet, but that shouldn't excuse Apple for not including a simple way to navigate the fields with the keyboard. There is a way, right?, and I'm just too blind even after googling? And no the Get Info window isn't good enough, because I want to change the song playing while I edit. I'm using the Windows version. I see that for Mac, Command-Right Arrow plays the next song. For Windows, it's just the Right Arrow. Do you lucky Mac-heads get to move around the fields with the arrow keys?

UPDATE: I retract this gripe. It's not as bad as I first thought.

Journal Journal: Ever had a monitor distort from getting too hot? 3

When my room warms up past 77 because of the afternoon sun and old house with no insulation or AC, the image stretches horizontally. Once it's stretched so far that the "File" menu is completely out of sight, it keeps going but also shifting everything towards purple. So the heat is doing something that isn't affecting the green gun equally. By this point, the top-center of the case is uncomfortably hot. The solution so far has been pointing a 12" fan at the top.

I opened the case today and sprayed air to dislodge a little bit of dust, but there wasn't very much at all. Nothing like the computer after half a year. So I'm thinking of getting a near-silent 92mm fan and having it circulate air inside the monitor, but I figured I'd ask if anyone else has seen this before. Any idea how long before the screen just dies?

Forgot to mention another interesting behavior. It stretches more when more of the screen is black, and less when there is more white. I can open up mspaint.exe, fill the image with black, and watch the screen distort as I resize the paint window. It also makes video jumpy since the light and dark being displayed is always changing.

Journal Journal: Nutritional value after a week in the fridge? 2 weeks?

Presumably Dole is full of BS. I didn't eat the asparagus I bought until 6 days later and I'm going to be just fine. I think.

How about nutrition though? If I wait a week or yes, almost two weeks for broccoli I ignored, what did I get out of it? 10% of the nutrition it had when I brought it home? 50%?

Yeah I tried to google it but there's too many pages that don't answer the question.

Journal Journal: Too much money plus cell phone GPS and balloon

I think it would be interesting to send up a mylar balloon with a GPS and PDA-cell phone that would call from all around the world reporting it's position. Of course this will be tracked on a laptop. This would involve extra batteries, and programming the phone (USB?) so it would only turn on say every 6 hours, try to find a tower, call, and turn off again. Yes this would rack up 4 minutes of international roaming charges every day if it found a signal, which is unlikely over much of Eurasia, for example, neverminding the oceans.

Cell phones do indeed work from 30,000 feet. How about 70,000 though? Assuming this contraption isn't shot down for someone's target practice, how about adding a model airplane servo to let out helium? The phone would be programmed to notice when it was descending and rather than have it land in Siberia or the ocean, it would start calling every half hour as it let out helium to land hopefully in North America. In my case, at least as close as possible to Oakland, but probably the central valley instead to avoid the water and airport.

Now in all probability when I have a thousand bucks to likely lose, plus potentially flying to another state or country for recovery, I'll spend it instead towards a powerchute, but until then I'll just keep dreaming.

Journal Journal: In a truly free market... 3

In a truly free market, the claim is that barriers to entry would be low-to-none and there wouldn't be government interference. Consequently monopolies would be temporary as the allure of profit would create competition. However, what will prevent a rich monopoly-holding company from buying beneficial legislation and votes with large campaign contributions? This legislation would create regulation and barriers to entry to preserve the monopoly. Seems to me that's inevitable, unless we all agree corporations shouldn't be people and so can't buy legislation as easily?

Until that is achieved though, it's a bad idea to remove government regulation while the corporations still have too much power. It would be like trying to reduce recidivism by cutting budgets for prisons but only later increasing funding for rehabilitation programs. The right way is increasing spending on rehabilitation and as crime rates decrease, closing prisons.

Journal Journal: Lyrics: Givin' It

Givin' it a-way (x12)
Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (all you've got to give a-way)

Who you think you foolin dressed like you ready for the streets
Stumblin, fumblin,
Shoes from mama's closet on your feet
Little (unintelligible) my mind
You think sex your only weapon
Show some cleavage and a little behind and you'll get em
Do you really believe
You can flirt your way
To the top
All pants and bras you drop and beds you hop
It's girls like you who make it hard for girls like me
I'd rather use my brains and save my sexuality
For main man
He's my base man
He likes me as I am
Knows I don't got strange plans
To screw and use, abuse, and lose the rules
How do you stay so cool while you fool?

Oh
Excuse me for my slip
I forgot
That you're not really smart enough to be so cool but
I think you better start thinkin down the line
When gravity and age pulls it all down with time

Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it in all away
Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it in all away

Lay myself down
To end another long day on the town
With the flicks of the tube
Flip the switch to six
Tickity tack tacky talk show variety with late night fantasies with girls in bikinis
Standing in the background
Just visual accessories, itemized, really sound?
No sense of pride
Only going for the ride
While you hide
On the side
The reason that you complied
Holding silly dreams in your mind
That in time
They will find the starlet sign and you'll be wined and dined
You think the exposure gives you clout
Leaving a cloud of doubt
Of what women are all about
They'll make you think you pretty girls are just mindless
They want to stereotype us
As long as you let them bind us
To one image
That keeps perpetrating
Imitating
Insinuating
Deliberating

Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it in all away
Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it

Competition is fierce in the 90's
Believe
Twenty divorces a minute, loves given up
Women have to make a living somehow
Or snag a rich duck who's sitting on lots of bucks
So they tuck, a little over here
And fill their A cups with silicone nightmare
Trying to look like the latest flavor of the month
Cause they think that's what the men really want
You know what they say about the oldest profession in history
It ain't no mystery
Men have always been so horny
And there have always been girls
Who trade their body for some money
Time hasn't changed that much you see
We live in a society that talks about being free
Free your love, free your mind, free your soul
But you know, nothing's for free

Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it in all away
Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it all away

Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it in all away
Givin' it a-way (you've gotta)
Givin' it a-way (oh you've got to give a-way)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it all away

Givin' it (you've got to give away girl)
Givin' it (you've got to give away)
Givin' it (you've got to give away girl)
Givin' it (you've got to give away)
Givin' it (you've got to give away girl)
Givin' it (you've got to give away)
Givin' it (you've got to give away girl)
Givin' it (you've got to give away)
Givin' all you got got, and all you got you give
You're givin' it all away girl, givin' it all away

Journal Journal: Yosemite Valley like you've never seen it before

I Guarantee It. Bonus.

Those are my best work I'd say. I'm really pleased to have my own site now to host full-sized photos from.

There's also an album from this year's Solano Stroll. For 25+ years on the second Sunday of September, 1.2 miles of avenue becomes a street fair with food, bands, dancers, art & crafts, and political organizations. This year that meant it fell on 9/11. But other than a banner at the start of the parade asking for a moment of silence that passed as it went by, it was the same old stroll. I'd be bitter if we let the terrorists take that date from us.

Journal Journal: linux: showing my ignorance 3

Can linux releases of software someday come pre-compiled with installers like windows has? Instead of having to compile every program? Unless linux becomes that easy to use, it seems destined to remain in a smaller niche of the PC market. I bookmarked this list of articles for getting started with linux, but I'm in no hurry to read and learn it all. If linux on a computer is like a house, and programs are furniture, I'd rather have them delivered fully assembled. Currently it seems like the pieces/programs always needs to be put together, but for now the instructions are all greek to me.

Journal Journal: video editing help: make a video of two others side by side? 4

Does anyone know how to take two same-sized (or different-sized) video clips and add them together side-by-side into one video that's twice as wide as each original? So 320x240 + 320x240 = 640x240? I'm limited to a Win2k system. The program could be commercial or free, either will do.
