SMOKE POT
I have not ever smoked pot, nor for that matter have I ever taken an drug like ecstasy, lsd, shrooms, cocaine, crack, heroine, paint thinner, toad skins, etc. I have never felt any compulsion to do so, to "try everything once." No, I don't feel a compulsion to "experiment." Drugs are dumb and people who use them are dumb, mmmmkay?

Yes I have smoked cigarettes once or twice, and just tonight I drank a beer. No I don't consider either "drug use." We all know what "drug use" means. You really should stop being disingenuous - it really is off-putting.

True story: during Thanksgiving break my first or second year of college, I was driving with my mother somewhere. Out of the blue, she asks (somewhat giddily) "SO....have you tried smoking pot yet?" Ummm, wtf?

Fucken 'boomers.

GO TO A "STRIP CLUB"
Strip clubs objectify and oppress women. The only emotions I can imagine feeling upon entering such a loathsome establishment are, simultaneously, shame and revulsion.

Now, I know what you're thinking: "what lame P.C. bullshit" and "Eh, tha girls work 'cause they wanna work, ya know" or some tired crap like that. "Ummm...yeah, whatever. See above note concerning disingenuity.

You know, for a brief moment, I actually bought into that faux feminist crap. You know what I'm refering to: the fairy tale in which every stripper is an innocent college student trying to "work her way through blah blah blah." Reality: they were all molested as children, which essentially by extension makes you child molester for watching them. Shame on you.

TELL MY KIDS THAT PRE-MARITAL SEX IS OKAY
Let's get something straight: sex is not for "fun." It is not "entertainment." It is for procreation. Period.

Furthermore, sex can make relationships complicated than they should be and often destroy them. No, I don't care about teenage pregnancy - that's a myth. What I care about is finding someone that you love and will spend the rest of your life with. That's what I did.

Yes, I am aware that is contrary to Rabbinical tradition (in Judaism, sexuality is not considered sinful). No, I don't care.

UNLIKE YOU, I THINK FOR MYSELF

Umm, dude, you're doing it wrong.

        That was me.

Oh, uh, was I supposed to admit that?

Well, I did have remedial classes.

  • Ever drank until you got buzzed? That's like a form of getting high. Ever skydived, bungie jumped, or rode a roller coaster? Excluding the minority who are simply terrified the entire time, people who enjoy it get a huge rush of endorphins. That's a naturally induced high. Are these people dumb too?

For most people, only having sex for procreation would destroy their relationship. Humans are sexual creatures and most people need outlets for their sexuality so it doesn't damage them or their inter-perso

      • Right, my mistake. So you don't consider drinking to be drug use, but you're not going to explain why one high is different from another high?

As for sex, what's your evidence that only having sex for procreation will overall be better for people and couples instead of simply not cheating? Just because you say so doesn't make it true. I'm putting forth the point that people are sexual and trying not to be could cause even more problems.

    • Right there with ya Sam (CyranoVR is quite the master of bait :) )...

      1. Did pot. Found it dull. Was curious but never did acid. I rarely drink. Maybe once or twice in a few years. Got buzzed in 1989. Didn't like it.

      2. Strip joints. Went a few times in the 90s. Mostly because my then girlfriend (now wife) took me to a few knowing I'd enjoy them. Then I went with a buddy a few times and when he got drunk enough to start yelling out in a dive strip club, "They're all whores" I never went again. At th
  • #1, #2, #3- done them all tried them all. But completely agreed with your reasoning and conclusions, without having to reference other people at all.

#1. Tried drugs, found out I have an ever-increasing tolerance level, decided that if I ever really needed drugs in the future I had to quit NOW. It's no fun in the hospital after that 50 car pileup if the morphine no longer works because you've built up a huge tolerance level to codine.

#2. Strip clubs. Got thrown out of one when I could no longer contr
  • .. smoking pot in a strip-club while having sex?

    Wow, that would blow! :)

    1) Honestly. I never ever smoked, and I even hate it when people even come near me with their stinksticks, but since about a year, about once a month or so, I`m having a joint with some friends (meaning 1 or 2 inhalers or something), just because it actually makes you feel relaxed and I`m always having a good time at that..

      2) Strip-clubs are immoral in the sense that the people "working" there could have a real future instead of being exploited. Then again, some of them wouldn`t want to do anything else for that kind of money. So far I haven`t been there, and I also don`t really see the need for it.

If your money was being spent elsewhere, it would be creating work elsewhere in the economy. If you saved it, it would be creating investment, which would also help. If you stuffed it in your matress, the central bank would m

      • If anyone notices any hypocracy between what I've written here and stuff that I've previously posted. Let's just say that life sometimes delivers its lessons the hard way.
    • 2) Strip-clubs are immoral in the sense that the people "working" there could have a real future instead of being exploited.

What exactly is preventing the strippers from working on that real future right now?

How would their situation improve if strip clubs disappeared?

      • Financial/educational dependencies.

I never said I wanted strip clubs closed. I`m just saying that many girls end up there not because they always dreamt of being a stripper, but because one thing lead to another. I`m sure many of them have other hopes and desires but happily play along because they think they have no choice. In that sense, the stripper club is part of the undercurrents of society, a catch-all net for dropouts that swallows young pretty innocence and spits out burned-up bitches. And not
  • Don't worry about the women. Strip clubs are degrading to men! I know, I know, everyone thinking that's a bunch of P.C. masculist bullshit, but when a bunch of money-lusting girls look at you like you're just an ATM, you'll feel differently about objectifying customers.
    • Now that's a good point.
      • I saw the original journal entry just after it was made. I couldn't decide whether or not it was a parody or another example of "borrowed and uncited" humor, but the subsequent journal entry says it was sincere. My reaction to the follow-up entry was "Who is he talking to? Is there anyone else reading this?" However, now going back and seeing so many comments, I'm rather surprised.

As regards the substance, I think it is pretty shallow philosophy, and doesn't strongly motivate me to deeper philosphic react

        • So now I should get off my duff and start working on some serious philosophic writing?

You should start by reading some philosophic works but people much smarter than you. I suggest Kant's Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals.
          • I have a degree in philosophy from one of the top universities in America (though the philosophy department is not especially strong). I have read lots of philosophic works, and still read some philosophy from time to time. My 30-year database of books which I've read has somewhere over 2,000 entries. In that context, your recommendation that I read more philosophy does not strike me as particularly clever.

I chose to lean to the polite side in my earlier comment. Let me be more clear. Your attempt at "phi

        • Er...that reads badly. Replace "much smarter etc" with "Classics of Philosophy."
          • Replace "reads badly" with "reads just as badly as most of your journal posts". Of course, you have the excuse that many of them are borrowed without attribution.

Or perhaps you actually intended "reads offensively". In that case, perhaps you succeeded in your intent.

Actually, I'm not that thin-skinned, but I sometimes play one on TV. My general advice is that if you have nothing substantive to say, it's usually better to say nothing.

            • Yes, reads "offensively." As in, poor word choice.

Still, you should consider reading Kant and others.
              • I regard Kant as overrated and much prefer Hume as regards that particular era. However, I do accept the categorical imperative, though these days there is great confusion as to what it actually means. Or more precisely, I accept it as I interpret it.
  • #1 Smoked pot a few times, haven't done any in a really long time. I've done mushrooms (twice) and lsd (5 times or so). Can't say as any really did much for me so I basicly stopped doing them. If I want to get 'high' I prefer the legal ways so why mess with the other stuff?

#2 I'm not big on strip clubs myself. I've been to them a few times. Got dragged there by others on a few occasions and I used to escort a friend who worked in one home from time to time.

I can see ways one might be done such that it is a

So basically, "I know what drugs are, and I won't listen to you if you try and question my viewpoint"? I know what you think "drug use" means. But I'm not sure if you actually know. Could you, for example, explain what makes pot a drug but tobacco not a drug? Or ecstasy a drug, but not alc

    • No, I'm not a rabid stoner, pushing for legalisation. Indeed, I've yet to even smoke a cigarette. But I do question why certain substances are deemed legal and others aren't. I can't see any real justification to it other than historical accident.

      Seconded.

Having smoked pot (never regularly -- just on occasion during college when someone passed a joint around), cigarettes and drank alcohol, it's rather hard to see what's so awful about pot that it must be illegal, unless you want to ban tobacco and alcoh

        • Plants that are good for hemp generally don't produce much THC. IIRC, they're similar in genus, but slightly different in species, but I could be wrong, and I'm currently too pissed off to google.

          I'll play this game, though.

#1. Never smoked pot. Got a contact high at a concert once. My throat started to close up. I had to leave before I passed out. I don't smoke cigarettes. I don't generally drink alcohol (although after today, I may go home and have a rum & coke), and I don't get "drunk". I've never ha

  • 1: The only ethical difference between tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis is legality. So long as that's clear, we're all OK.

2: Strip clubs debase and manipulate men, too. What's your point?

A woman is a sexual object. So is a man. Women who refuse to admit this tend to be, well, cheap and tawdry.

(now, if you'd come up and said "strip clubs debase marriage by allowing lust outside of one's spouse", you'd hit the nail right on the head.)

3: I think far less attention should be placed on sex and far more on the

The difference being that I've NEVER had alcohol, and the closest I've gotten to smoking is second-hand smoke - never had one in my mouth. Way too nasty and revolting to even contemplate.

    I'm more straight-edge than the straigh-edge punks, and I'm not formally straight-edge :-p

And while I've never been to a strip club, I don't worry myself about it being oppressive or exploitative. Hell, at least those girls get PAID to perform - there are estimate
