Submission + - Google to buy Nielson demographic data (cnn.com)

link-error writes: "Under an agreement to be announced Wednesday, Google (Charts, Fortune 500) will pay Nielsen an undisclosed amount to obtain detailed information about the kinds of people who watch specific TV shows." Submission + - Microsoft Photosynth technology/NASA Update

http://labs.live.com/Shuttle+Endeavour+Tiles.aspx writes: "As the seven-member crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour prepare for their return tomorrow morning, Microsoft and NASA have released an update to their recent collaboration to give the public unprecedented access to the shuttle experience. Taken from space, the new 3-D collection using Microsoft's Photosynth technology includes views of the shuttle's underside prior to docking at the International Space Station on August 10th. Prior to docking at the International Space Station, Endeavour did a complete somersault enabling astronauts to photograph the shuttle's bottom-side. The photos were then sent back to NASA for analysis and later shared with Microsoft LiveLabs to compile a collection or "synth." Online viewers can go to http://labs.live.com/Shuttle+Endeavour+Tiles.aspx to access the new 3-D images of the shuttle. By clicking and dragging their mouse, visitors to the site will be able to explore parts of the shuttle including minute details or zooming out and panning 360 degrees to place the shuttle in a wider context. He now faces a lawsuit, from Coupons, inc., alleging DMCA violations. The company alleges that his actions are equivalent to those of DeCSS creator "DVD Jon". Mr. Stottlemire asks how deleting files off one's own computer can be illegal, while some lawyers suggest that the DMCA is very broad and may apply in this case.

Submission + - Comcast blocking BitTorrent traffic

Phanatic1a writes: P2P-oriented blog Torrentfreak claims that Comcast has now started to sever their customers' BitTorrent connections: "It is reported that Comcast is using an application from Sandvine to throttle BitTorrent traffic. Sandvine breaks every (seed) connection with new peers after a few seconds if it's not a Comcast user. This makes it virtually impossible to seed a file, especially in small swarms without any Comcast users. Some users report that they can still connect to a few peers, but most of the Comcast customers see a significant drop in their upload speed."
