This reminds me of an old tale.

Sun and Wind were arguing who was more powerful. Both argued at length and neither would accept the other one's arguments, so they decided for a competition. They saw a man walking across the land and Wind suggested that whoever gets the coat off him should be considered the most powerful one.

Sun agreed and Wind prepared for the worst. He started to blow and the winds picked up, he put more and more power behind it and soon a veritable hurricane was ripping at the poor man in his quest to pry that coat off him. But the more Wind blew, the tighter the man grabbed his coat and didn't want to let go, growing only more determined at staying warm and sheltered within his only protection from the elements that threw him about.

Soon Wind sat down, exhausted and wheezing. He laughed at Sun who was still sitting there, knowing that she could never succeed where he could not with all his might.

Sun did what Sun did best. She shone. She brightened up the day and warmth filled the air, her beams heating up the ground the man walked on and giving him warmth as well. She just sat there, waiting, providing the warmth every being needs.

And the man eventually decided it's too hot to wear a coat and took it off.

I leave the interpretation to the reader. It's not hard, but maybe we should still explain it to the DOJ, I doubt they'll get it.

Well, everyone IS guilty. I can't remember (someone please help me with a link) that there was a study that showed that everyone breaks the law a couple times every day, without even noticing.

We get more and more fucked up and entirely unenforceable laws. The only reason being that IF, cancel that, AS SOON AS we need something to nail you down with, we'll find something.

I agree. I think as computer users, we're mature enough not to need this level of familiarity. This is one reason that at some point down the road, I hope to be able to use both Windows for my digital audio workstation in my home studio, and some form of "SteamOS" for playing games. Of course, with companies like EA/Origin and Ubisoft using their own game store platforms, I don't see all PC games being compatible with a SteamOS for some time to come.

If you're a fan of any current computing tech, either mobile or on the desktop, you really don't want to be bringing up Sherman Act violations.

I can't think of a single major manufacturer of PCs, mobiles, or commercial operating systems for PCs or mobiles that isn't guilty of anti-trust violations.

New technology will come and add to it, that's a given. But do you really think throwing out what we used for ages is a good idea? Can you point me to a new input medium aside of keyboard and mouse that offers better control in a desktop environment? And no, I don't give a shit about how great the new crap works on tablets and phones. I want a DESKTOP operating system. If something else works better on a tablet, do something else on a tablet. Simple as that. Even Apple was smart enough to know that one size fits all works in operating systems about as well as it does with underwear.

Initially, maybe. When the first barns get flattened by M1s, including whatever is inside, the resistance should falter pretty quickly.

The problem with these "emergency modes" is that they run infinitely. With censorship and martial law in place, how would you know that it's time to get back to a normal mode of operation if the powers that are don't want to return to it?

That's something entirely different. Nuclear war has been planned again and again. Katrina and 9/11 were unplanned and had to be improvised. 9/11 was simply a total surprise and Katrina, well, while it was likely to happen and everyone knew it would, there was simply no money in preparing for it.
