Submission + - Company of Heroes and DirectX 10 (gamealmighty.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Yesterday Relic released the 1.70 patch for Company of Heroes, making it the first DirectX 10 game on the market. Matt Butrovich at Game Almighty takes a look at the new patch and offers up his impressions with plenty of comparison screenshots and benchmarks to go around. Is buying Windows Vista and an 8800GTX finally worth it? http://www.gamealmighty.com/story-individual/story /DirectX10_and_Company_of_Heroes_Time_to_Upgrade/

Submission + - Intel in graphics partnership with Nvidia?

An anonymous reader writes: Intel may get some help building its upcoming floating point accelerator Larrabee. Following some rumors earlier this month, which claimed that Intel and Nvidia will be trading technologies, TG Daily now says that it has received information that the two companies will be announcing a "graphics partnership". An acquisition of Nvidia is a bit unlikely right now, but if Intel has access to Nvidia GPU technology, what exactly does that mean for AMD/ATI? Looks like Intel is catching up with AMD's ideas much faster than we thought.

Submission + - The Ignorance of Crowds (strategy-business.com)

sounil writes: From the abstract: "The open source model, which relies on contributions from many individuals, can be an important factor in innovation, but it comes with limitations. Although this approach can be effective at refining programs or ideas that already exist, it is less successful when used to generate new ideas or to complete a project." The article provides some very interesting insights into why certain open source projects succeed and why others falter and how one can take advantage of these insights for future projects.

Submission + - Pidgin Developers Refuse to Support Slackware

binary1011100 writes: "Pidgin (formely gaim) angered many slackware users when they made the following statement on their wiki:

"We have no developers using Slack, and furthermore, several of us actively dislike that distribution for its history of broken installs, as well as for its non-existant package management. You cannot create true packages for Slack." The wiki has since been changed There is also a discussion on Linux Questions concerning this issue.

Clearly whoever wrote the original wiki entry is very small minded, variation is one of the things that makes FOSS so great, it's the freedom to choose what you want to use, I feel this kind of bad attitude lowers the FOSS movement. Ultimatley if the developers won't support Slackware just because it's not what they use, then I think this says more about them than it does about Slackware."

Submission + - What if America Pulled out of Iraq?

Anonymous Coward writes: "Everyone has an opinion on the war in Iraq. Most Americans appear to be accepting that Bush has no clue what he's doing. So I ask slashdot readers a simple question: Should America just pull out of Iraq? Would that be irresponsible? Do you think its the right thing to do?"

Submission + - Another Secret UNFAIR Free Trade Deal? Massive H-1

While we all are examining this new Trade Deal and thankfully Public Citizen is analyzing, yet another Corporate cheap labor agenda item is potentially about to be passed, brokered in back room deals and going unnoticed.

The bill, S.1348 : A bill to provide for comprehensive immigration reform and for other purposes. From the congressional record:The text of S.1348 has not yet been received from GPO. In other words, the bill is not available to the public for review.

Yet the renamed S.1348 is supposedly S.2611, the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill that has massive H-1B Visa increases, yet even more guest worker Visas and even a method to turn our University system into a glorified green card machine.

The text is not even presented to the public, yet this is supposedly the Senate business of May 14th, which is tomorrow!!!!.

This version now is fully 64 bits compatible, new modifers were added, a couple of composite nodes were added, and a revamp of the old mesh primitives was done. But most relevant to mention is Blender 2.44's new long-awaited but unexpected feature: subsurface scattering (SSS) support! If you didn't get yours already, well... its now news on Slashdot. Maybe you can get it tomorrow...

Submission + - Some top stories on Macnn.com are really just ads

Anonymous Coward writes: "Every week or two Macnn.com posts some "top stories" on the main page about refurb Mac systems. But all they are is fishing attempts for clicks to the Apple website. All the links in this "top story" direct through click.linksynergy.com. They are not being honest and telling people that the story is really just one big ad for Apple products. Refurb computers in the Apple store are not breaking news events."

Submission + - Let there Be (LED) Light!

Beryll201 writes: While everyone is waiting for the LED backlit Macbooks to arrive, a few companies already have products with this feature available. One of the most interesting of these notebooks is Fujistu's new ultraportable, the P7230. This sub-3 pound notebook has a 10.6" LCD and has a battery life of up to 6 hours thanks to that LED and some other powersaving features (Fujitsu says it goes up to 9.75 hours when an extra battery is swapped with the DVD drive). Companies like Sony and Asus have also started to offer LED backlit models and soon it will be standard, but in the meantime the P7230 is packed with features and is cheaper than much of the competition.

Submission + - Yahoo! Photos to shut down

prostoalex writes: "Yahoo has finally made a decision regarding Yahoo! Photos vs. Flickr battle, and will be shutting down Yahoo! Photos by the fall of this year. Even though Yahoo! Photos currently maintains a higher share of Internet visits, Flickr growth convinced the company to maintain a single photo site from now on. Says USA Today: "Stewart Butterfield, who co-founded Flickr in 2004 with wife Caterina Fake, says the move is a "validation" of the central idea of Flickr: that photos in the digital age are very different from a physical print. "We saw it as a means of communication and connecting with people," says Butterfield, Flickr's general manager. "People can take a picture and get immediate feedback from all over the world, and you can't do that with a printed photo."""
