That might be so, but here in Australia we were having something of a minor epidemic of pertussis and there were prominent health warnings about it especially with respect to infants. Sure, adults don't generally get it anymore thanks to the previous rounds of vaccination but the incidence is rising with the rise in ASS (that's Adult Stupidity Syndrome).

Submission + - Aussie Gyms to pay 15x more to play music (ibtimes.com)

porjo writes: An Australian federal magistrate has ruled in favour of a price hike on copyright fees for music played to patrons of gyms & fitness classes. The action was sought by the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia representing labels including Sony Music, EMEI, Universal & Warner. Under the new ruling, fees would rise from 96.8 cents to $15 a class. Stephen Peach representing PPCA had this to say in response to protests from the fitness industry "We feel confident in our position that one of the reasons for the hysteria on the other side is because they know how important music is in a gym. I mean, who wants to exercise in silence? Music is so central to what they're doing, but it would seem to be valuable to them in every way except financial.'' Lauretta Stace of Fitness Australia responded with "The music industry is in trouble, nobody's buying CDs and the PPCA wants to plug the hole left in their pockets by passing the burden on to our clients"

Submission + - CSIRO to sue AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobi

Dexter Herbivore writes: In the ongoing saga of the Australian governements science agency the CSIRO suing to protect their wifi patents, The Australian newspaper reports that the CSIRO have now launched legal action against the 3 major US carriers.
From the article "Court filings obtained by The Australian have revealed that the CSIRO has sued the three carriers for alleged infringements of its WiFi patent in eastern Texas's US District Court, as it pursues a fresh bounty from its intellectual property golden goose. Its WiFi technology, which is almost standard in laptops and smartphones, has already netted the science agency an estimated $250 million in royalties."

Submission + - Gulf Oil Spill Reaches Loop Current (weather.com)

An anonymous reader writes: "Per The Weather Channel's tropical expert Dr. Richard Knabb, 'based on satellite images, model simulations, and on-site research vessel reports, I think it is reasonable to conclude that the oil slick at the surface is very near or partially in the loop current. The loop current is responsible in the first place for extending that stream of oil off to the southeast in satellite imagery.' With its proximity to the northern edge of the Loop Current it may be only a matter of weeks or even days before the ocean surface oil is transported toward the Florida Keys and southeast Florida." This can be verified by several satellite image sources.

Not if their decisions shapes text books all over the country. Not if they are receiving any Federal funding for their schools.

If they want to blur the line between church and state, and between facts and politics, then surely they won't mind the Federal Government taking away funding. After all, the Church will pick up the slack, right:)?

I have to admit though, living in an ultra-blue state (Oregon), it would be amusing to see my communities reaction to receiving a K-12 set of "Texanized" books.

I had pertussis last year (although I had been vaccinated as a child) - the GP dismissed my guess out of hand despite the signature cough.
He finally shrugged and ordered a blood test, I was right. Ordinarily I wouldn't give a damn but you have to be very careful not to spread it to infants for whom it can be fatal.

Google-itis is bollocks, there's a much bigger problem in people finding bogus information about vaccinations on the web and not getting their kids done.

Crime

Submission + - U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Indefinite Confinement

An anonymous reader writes: The United States Supreme Court today upheld a law that allows the Federal government to keep prison inmates behind bars beyond the end of their sentences, if officials determine they may be "sexually dangerous" in the future. The case involves one Graydon Comstock, who was certified as "dangerous" six days before his 37-month federal prison term for processing child pornography was to end. Granted, the law is currently limited to sex offenders who no one is clamoring to defend, but given the sometimes dubious nature of sex-offense convictions and the slow creep of otherwise-reasonable laws, how long will it be before we see it used in a manner other than that for which it was intended?

Submission + - Matter-antimatter bias seen in Fermilab collisions (nytimes.com)

ubermiester writes: The NYTimes is reporting that scientists Fermilab have found evidence of a very small (about 1%) average difference between the amount of matter/anti-matter produced in a series of particle collisions. FTA: "[T]he team, known as the DZero collaboration, found that the fireballs produced pairs of the particles known as muons, which are sort of fat electrons, slightly more often than they produced pairs of anti-muons. So the miniature universe inside the accelerator went from being neutral to being about 1 percent more matter than antimatter." This offers a possible explanation for why there is so much more matter than anti-matter in the universe in spite of "Big Bang" theory suggesting that there should be equal amounts of both. It's solved then.

It goes like this, you have a physical server that is dual processor system with 2Gs of ram. You create a VM with a single proc and 1G of ram. When code needs to be tested it creates a cloned VM of itself using the additional proc and ram, runs the code, tests the output then destroys the VM.

Actually, I agree with you for the most part but have to say that it's not just the locked door. I believe it's the locked door paired with 9/11. As others have pointed out, before 9/11 no-one ever thought of the terrorists just running the plane into a building. Even with a locked door, the pilots would have, probably, opened the door to the terrorists in the belief that the worst thing they could do was take the whole plane down and opening the door would just increase the possibility of the hostages being bargained for.
