for example, the latest level on the Cliq locks out root and the holes to get root.

Get a Nokia N900. It's not Android, but it's Linux, it's a damn fine phone/skype/IM/facetwitter appliance, and it comes with xterm preinstalled and gainroot ready in the repositories.

Downsides: slightly heavy, slightly big, slightly short battery life (but maybe I ought to not use the screen as a flashlight, no?). That hasn't made anything impossible for me, it's just something I have had to adapt to.

Upsides: Nokia loves you. Nokia loves your nerdy peculiarities. They want you to hack it, see http://blogs.nokia.com/pushn900/

Well, what's next? Health care is a product that may extend your span on the earth. Of course you want it, and you're probably willing to pay for it, too.

I can think of another product that's even more vital to extending your span on the earth than health care. And that is food. Without proper food care, you average life span would be measured in months not years.

Therefore, I propose that we nationalize food care (we've already started! Subsidies...) in the coming years and enslave the farmers in the same way that we're going to enslave the doctors. If we only nationalize food care, then our chocolate needs will be taken care of. Ever year the ration will be bigger than the last.

Submission + - Math Skills For Programmers - Necessary Or Not? (skorks.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Currently the nature of most programming work is such that you don't really need math skills to get by or even to do well, after all linear algebra is no help when building database driven websites. However, Skorks contends that if you want to do truly interesting work in the software development field, math skills are essential and furthermore, will become increasingly important as we are forced to work with ever larger data sets (making math-intensive algorithm analysis skills a priority).

Comment It will increase illegal immigration (Score 1) 2424

Residence cards, visas, etc. only increase illegal immigration. These documents can be obtained one way or another, after that they keep people from returning to their home countries, as they have invested into these residence cards.

If there were no visas, no residence cards, no passports, people would come and go home after a while. They would not stick to a certain country, because they had bought a residence card there.

Such residence ID cards are good for officials who would be able to sell them one way or another, but they have nothing to do with reducing illegal immigration.

Market forces would be able to regulate migration global-wise much better than corrupted officials at different countries.

In Kenya, Niger, China, Ireland, etc. there are nice places near rivers, in the woods, where it would be nice to build a house and live. Let those, who want emigrate from these countries, emigrate and those who want to come and live there, come and live there.

Crime? There should be built more modern automated prisons where criminals could be re-educated and reformed. These are the criminals of the Earth and are common global responsibility.

So long as it's only insecure on jailbroken phones, MS have perfect deniability - I think they'd take that, it really depends where they see their market, as gatekeepers for content or as OS providers. Sure, they'll want to do both, but to some extent they're counter productive (people would rather have an open OS which runs counter to the gatekeeper walled garden approach) so they'll probably opt for somewhere in between (a walled garden but not too difficult to jailbreak the phone).

I concede that I worded it wrong - what is being sent are not plain images.
However I repeat my initial assertion that Opera Mini is not a browser in the usual meaning of the word and can not render full blown html/css on its own.

I'll give it to you that it 'renders' what Opera's servers send it.
