Submission + - Unstoppable iPad's Only Competition is iPhone? (smartertechnology.com)

An anonymous reader writes: With HP dropping out of the tablet market, Amazon, Samsung, and LG are poised to pick up the gauntlet but not in time to make much of a dent in the Christmas season, according to iSuppli, when the iPad's main competition will be the iPhone 5 which is slated to debut this fall. I knew HP was in trouble when I saw its TouchPad at Cosco (which only sells deeply discounted wholesale items). Lets hope that Amazon, Samsung and LG can pick up the slack!

The only good news is that a higher propertion than average are in employment. Brit CS majors also do badly immediately after graduation. No similar US figures exist reports the Computing Education Blog.

Submission + - Judge Bounces Google's Complaint Over Android Code (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: "A U.S. trade judge has rejected Google's move to block the testimony of a Microsoft expert witness in the dispute with Motorola over patents allegedly used by Android. The judge denied Google's motion to prevent the expert hired by Microsoft from testifying about the Android source code at an upcoming hearing. Last week, Google accused Microsoft of violating a confidentiality agreement struck between Microsoft, Motorola and Google in the ITC case. The judge rejected Google's motion on Monday. 'The ALJ [Administrative Law Judge] finds no basis to discern from Google's statement whether Google made a reasonable, good-faith effort to resolve the matter with Microsoft,' he wrote in his ruling."

What happens to companies like HTC and like who do not have any OS that is closely associated with them? Also the way BB is going. It could be a major acquisition target. Will HTC go for it. or will MS consume it for the sake of getting some more patents

Comment Bogus Patents ?? (Score 1, Insightful) 294

Android's success has resulted in a 'hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.'"

Patents are granted to these companies. When did it become bogus? If Google thinks this is bogus. They need to fight and get the patents invalidated. It is not as if Google is a small company and cannot fight. Google may have purposefully violated patents from other companies and hence they do not protect the OEMs who are implementing Android. If Google thinks these are bogus then fight and make sure these patents are invalidated.

Submission + - Microsoft Makes Fun of Google's Gmail (winbeta.org)

BogenDorpher writes: "Microsoft recently held an event called the Microsoft Global Exchange sales conference. At this conference, one of the attendees managed to snag a very special and funny sales video that pokes fun at Google's Gmail. The video is called "Gmail Man" and is intended to show you just how much Google cares more about advertising revenue than privacy. Ouch."

Open Source-Friendly Smartphones For the Small Office? 222

Thunderstruck writes "I work in a small office with just two computers. Both machines run long-term-service releases of Ubuntu, with Gnome, and Evolution for scheduling, contact management and electronic mail. We plan to stick with Linux long-term. For telephone service, we're using smartphones. In order to keep everything straight, we need phones that can synchronize easily with the calendars and contact data on each owner's desktop machine. We cannot use cloud based services for this function due to ethics rules, and for security reasons. Right now, we do all of this with older Palm phones, but these are a dying breed. What options are out there right now for phones that will sync with Evolution (or another good Linux PIM suite) which do not require data to go through the cloud first?"
