1 handed with a semi-automatic pistol I can fire 10 rounds in just under 10 seconds into an 8 inch bullseye at 25 yards, with at least 60% hit rate on a really bad day. 8/10 is the norm for me. In short, burst fire is pointless. I would rater conserve ammo and make the hits count.

High capacity clips are a convenience. I can reload a clip in under 3 seconds and return to firing. It's easy. Also getting high capacity mags in the US even when they were illegal was trivial. Seriously, you never held a gun have you?

Ok. I'll just cut the long barrel off and have a short rifle that's just as deadly at close range. Nothing is solved.

You do realize that the only real purpose of full auto weapons is covering fire in active combat situations right? Full auto fire is terrible for actually trying to hit someone except in movies.

b-b-guns are too easy. bow an arrow is too easy with a compound and is a real bitch with a recurve. I've done both.

Handguns, 1 handed, are actually really demanding but not exhausting to shoot. So yes - I would enjoy it less if I had to use something other than a handgun. In fact I only like to shoot .22 or 9mm.

Bolt action rifles are amazingly cheap and great for hunting. I have a Mosin, $90. Dirt cheap ammo.

Frankly, bolt action is all you need for hunting.

Thing is, semi auto or auto doesn't change much. An automatic weapon is not a good choice for a very large number of reasons.

Reality is, a semi auto handgun is absolutley all you need for killing unarmed civilians. Even a revolver will do, just pack some speedloaders.

Yes. People will play less Farmville and less Zynga games if they are not there on the screen reminding them about their farm/whatever when they check their facebook page every 5 minutes.

People will play existing games less and be less exposed to new games resulting in a death spiral that is impossible to get out of.

Remember, Zynga has never made a single "good" game - plenty of profitable and popular games - but largley as a result of placement and spread through facebook. Nobody I know ever got a Zynga game outside of facebook besides Words with Friends on the iPhone.

Not saying Zynga is dead - but they will never be "big news" without Facebook. They'll just be another crappy company making crapy flash games based on other peoples games.

Yes - but the point of cruise missiles is the fact that when fired at near their maximum range the ship is safe from retaliation. Many countries still have nothing better than a SCUD to defend themselves from a naval assault.

Unfortunatley for the rail gun, most activley in use SCUDs have a range of up to 1200 miles. Now before you run with that number, SCUDs have inertial nav and this means that at max range it's pure luck if they hit the target. With that said, at 200 miles - rail gun range, the SCUD will hit a DDG.

SCUDs are cheap and readily available in the middle east, asia and the former soviet block. In fact, pretty much any country on our "does not like us" list has SCUDs. This means that no ship is ever going within 500mi of an unsecured coastline.

In short, the rail gun is useless.

Comment Re:Old news... (Score 4, Insightful) 321

Yeah - but can you replace the rails while underway?

Here's something for you - a DDG carries 56 Tomahawks, but can load up to 96 if they carry nothing but Tomahawks in their VLS. Rate of fire - 1 missile per second.

The real question is, what are you going to shoot at that's only 200mi aways? 200mi might sound "far" but reality is that modern anti ship missiles have range 500-1000 miles.

No DDG is going to sail up to 200mi of a hostile to shoot it with a railgun when then can launch a Tomahawk with it's 800mi range for a Block III or 1500 for Block IIs.

Ray Bradbury Has Died 315

dsinc was the first to note, but an anonymous reader writes "Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451, the dystopian novel about the logical conclusion of many trends in modern society, and many other works that have inspired fans of speculative fiction for decades, has died at the age of 91 in Los Angeles, California, Tuesday night, June 5th, 2012. No details on how he died were released, but I suspect it may have had something to do with the Earth orbiting the sun over 90 times since he was born. I guess we'll have to wait to be sure."

So no. Far from it.

I would just rather have a short and fun life than a long a dull one. I don't want to die of old age. To me there is something horribly unnatural and perverse about hanging on to life long past the point of life being worth living. Yet in our society that seems to be the MO.

I'm with you. I don't know when the fear of losing our lives has replaced the thrill of living them to the fullest and being willing to sacrifice all to achieve our dreams.

The GP can claim that Dan Osman (the guy in the YouTube) was stupid and sent himself to an early grave at 35. Say what you will about him and his "stupid" and "reckless" life style - the man created "controlled free-falling". He was inspirational to many and people lived through him.

I would rather die at 35 having experienced the thrills that Dano has than of old age in a wheel chair soiling myself and slowly losing my mind.
