Submission + - North American Union? The Amero?

shdowhawk writes: It seems that there is a movement going on set forth by the governments of Canada, USA, and Mexico to merge the three countries together into a proposed "North American Union". Think borderless European Union, but for North America. Is it just me or has no one else heard of this?

As part of this movement, a new form of currency has already begun production in the Denver Mint. Does anyone else think that maybe we the citizens of these countries should potentially get a vote/referendum about something like this?

Here is a link with some videos and more information on a process that already began in 2005: Amero Coin

Submission + - OLPC a hit in remote Peruvian village (chicagotribune.com)

mrcgran writes: "Chicago Tribune is running a story about the effects of OLPC on a remote village in Peru: "Doubts about whether poor, rural children really can benefit from quirky little computers evaporate as quickly as the morning dew in this hilltop Andean village, where 50 primary school children got machines from the One Laptop Per Child project six months ago. At breakfast, they're already powering up the combination library/videocam/audio recorder/music maker/drawing kits. At night, they're dozing off in front of them — if they've managed to keep older siblings from waylaying the coveted machines. Peru made the single biggest order to date — more than 272,000 machines — in its quest to turn around a primary education system that the World Economic Forum recently ranked last among 131 countries surveyed." A detailed log has been kept and a youtube video is also available."

Submission + - What are the best network monitoring programs? 1

Ace writes: What are the best programs to keep track of all the IP addresses of incoming and outgoing connections that are connecting to your computer? I've been using firewall software but lately I've discovered strange anomolous connections to .ru sites that I can't explan (and I've run virus scan, have firewall, etc). I'd really like to find a package that logs a list of all sites, their IP's, etc (incoming and outgoing) and which program is doing it. I'd like not to have to reformat but it's looking likely.

Submission + - Iraq War Lash Soldiers (youtube.com)

mmwus writes: "http://nethubcentral.com/ Just imagine, if it were you there? If it were you who wondered, does anyone care? As reported on October 26, 2007: New York — Iraq war veterans now stationed at a base in upstate New York say that morale among US soldiers in the country is so poor, many are simply parking their Humvees and pretending to be on patrol, a practice dubbed "search and avoid" missions. So, I ask, "Do those of us on safe ground away from the sounds of guns and mourns of pain really care?" Ask yourself, "Is there something that you, as an individual, would like to say to the Soldiers?""

Submission + - Linux MCE: All Your Components Are Belong to Us (fastsilicon.com)

mrneutron2003 writes: "
While looking at new Linux technologies, we ran across an amazing OS called Linux MCE. This OS literally resembles the Borg from the popular Star Trek series. The operating system assimilates every component in a house from audio video gear, receivers, TVs, phones, cell phones, web cams, all infrared devices, lighting, alarms systems, and many others into a mesh like network of interoperability. Is this the end all be all of Home media centers? It integrates every component in a house into one cohesive system that follows users anywhere. One would think that this monolithic orgy of electronic devices would take hours and hours to setup and thousands of dollars in equipment. However, it takes a little under four hours to have a fully automated, cataloged home media mesh network that puts cost effective home mobility and productivity to a whole new standard. Bill Gates' operational house for a minuscule of the price, read on for more information.

Submission + - NASA awards government tech invention of the year (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "Sounds like something straight out of a Terminator movie: A device that can act like muscle and nerves to expand and contract surfaces is the NASA Government Invention of the Year. The Macro-Fiber Composite, or MFC, is made up of ceramic fibers and can be attached to a structure to bend it, reduce vibrations and monitor force. By applying voltage to the MFC, the ceramic fibers change shape to expand or contract and turn the resulting force into a bending or twisting action on the material. MFC technology could also find its way into inflatable space structures can be used for antennas, communication satellites, space station trusses, and solar sail support structures, NASA said."

Submission + - Net based Ron Paul fund raising smashes record

An anonymous reader writes: https://www.ronpaul2008.com/ Message from Ron (12/17/07) What a day! I am humbled and inspired, grateful and thrilled for this vast outpouring of support. On just one day, in honor of the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, the new American revolutionaries brought in $6.04 million, another one-day record. The average donation was $102; we had 58,407 individual contributors, of whom an astounding 24,915 were first-time donors. And it was an entirely voluntary, self-organized, decentralized, independent effort on the internet. Must be the "spammers" I keep hearing about!

XueCast writes: "http://www.xuecast.com/?p=378, The researchers at the Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada have just announced that most of their test subjects ( People with chronic pain diseases ) experienced better pain relief from the virtual reality environments such as video games, than from the pain killer drugs. But the researchers are not quite sure yet of why the virtual reality therapies are more effective than the pain medications in many short term pain management cases."

Submission + - U.S. Urged to Keep Space Shuttles Flying Past 2010 (yahoo.com) 1

DarkNemesis618 writes: A U.S. Representative has proposed that NASA keep the shuttle fleet flying past its 2010 retirement date. The move would help prevent NASA from relying on Russian rockets during the gap between the Space Shuttle retirement and the start of the Orion program. One proposal would keep the shuttle fleet flying from 2010 to 2013 while another would keep the fleet alive until the Orion program is ready in about 2015. In 2011, the exemption that has allowed NASA to purchase Soyuz rockets for trips to the Space Station ends, and they would need an extension to keep using Russian rockets until the Orion program is ready. NASA's other option lies in the private sector, but so far, the private sector's progress does not look like it will meet the 2011 deadline. Keeping the shuttle fleet flying for a couple more years seems like it would help keep American presence in space without having to rely on the Russian space program.
