Journal Journal: Let's see if anyone reads this: Current State of the Internet forums 3

I've always enjoyed that certain forums I've posted in had a certain decorum. For example, I used to get on F-Body.com every couple hours and swap info with Camaro and Firebird enthusiasts, until one day someone, rather than respond calmly, wrote, "F... you, you're full of s.." and let's just say that was the best part of it. I stopped going that day and have been back 3 or 4 times in the 6 or 7 years since.

Submission + - Self Assembling Foam Robot (discovery.com)

b0bby writes: Discovery News reports:
"Combine off-the-shelf insulation foam and modular robot components and you get a self-assembling robot that could be fit to a variety of tasks.

The Modular Robotics Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, in a project led by Shai Revzen, has created a robot that can be assembled from foam that hardens and pieces that allow the robot to move. The “foambot” looks ungainly, and it is. But once you have a shape — and a task — in mind, the foam sprayer can lay down a body plan that fits."

Submission + - Sony Ericsson website hacked (net-security.org)

An anonymous reader writes: It seems that hacking Sony's assets has become a communal game in the hacker underground. Since the PSN hack, hardly a week went by without a hacker notifying the public about the latest hack of a Sony site and the compromise of user information.

The latest attack of that kind has allegedly been performed by a Lebanese hacker that goes by the handle "Idahc", who claims to have hacked the database of ca.eshop.sonyericsson.com with an SQL injection.

Submission + - Apple Acknowledges Mac Defender Existence (net-security.org)

Orome1 writes: It took a while for Apple to react properly to the onslaught of Mac Defender and similar fake AV aimed at Mac users, but they finally did it. Only days after the revelation of internal Apple documents that instructed AppleCare and Apple store employees not to acknowledge the existence of Mac Defender and not to offer help in removing it from infected computers when asked by the users, the company has posted a support document that explains the situation and offers advice on how to avoid installing this malware and how to remove it.

Submission + - Space Archaeology Uncovers Lost Pyramids (bbc.co.uk)

krou writes: A new technique dubbed "space archaeology" using satellites and infra-red imaging has helped uncover 17 new pyramids in Egypt, as well as some 1,000 tombs, and 3,000 ancient settlements. The mud bricks used to build Egyptian structures means it has a different density to the surrounding soil, and thus shows up in the images. Dr Sarah Parcak, who pioneered the technique, said that "Indiana Jones is old school, we've moved on from Indy, sorry Harrison Ford."
Android

Submission + - Android developer community uproar (androidpolice.com)

An anonymous reader writes: This morning the Android Police posted an article which claims the the boot-loader and kernel for the upcoming HTC Evo3D smartphone is cryptographically signed--effectively eliminating any possibility of gaining root access to the hardware for the installation of custom ROM's, kernels, themes, etc. This also puts the end user at the mercy of the manufacturer and carrier for updates.

This exploded into an all-out digital protest on Twitter, HTC's Facebook page (gaining over 1000 participants an hour), HTC's own community forums, and countless other forums.

HTC has supposedly responded saying that their bootloader policy is going to be reviewed.
