Comment Having done some Excel development... (Score 1) 187

About 13 years ago, as a long-time C++ developer, I was asked to revamp a complex order form written in Excel, using VBA. It was a weird experience because it was like time-travelling back to about 1990, in terms of programming capabilities. Needless to say, after working on that for a few months, I wouldn't trust Excel for my lemonade stand, leave alone anything important. It is crazily unstable.

Hello, fellow 5-digit Slashdotter. I, too, have also not moved on.

I do participate in Reddit a lot, but I think it's an absolute garbage company. However, there are some really good communities to be found if you dig a bit.

I can't imagine how it could possibly be a good investment.

Jeez, I hate this kind of butterfly-squashing blowharding. I hate it for the same reason I hate those books and TV shows that blather on about how all the technology in Star Trek and Star Wars isn't possible. Who gives a sh*t? It's FICTION, people! Just STFU and enjoy the ride.

It's the difference between science fiction and plain fiction.

I once tested this idea with a large coil I placed against the ceiling, hoping that my upstairs neighbour's equipment would be caught within the near field. I then played some horrible schlager through the coil. Unfortunately, the only effect I got was on my side, with a large metal rack vibrating to the tune.

FYI, the podcast ["Behind the Bastards"](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/behind-the-bastards/id1373812661) is currently doing a 4 part deep dive on "Robert E. Lee: A Lifetime of Failure." I'm only up to the middle of part 3 with him starting the war as commander of Viginian forces (the Confederacy is still being formed) but the general vibe so far is "he is definitely not the genius the Lost Cause makes him out to be, but he's smart enough to pull back Jackson from invading Maryland and provoking the Union because they have no army yet." Worth a listen.

Regarding the apocalyptic mindset, I'd like to propose that if anyone ever makes a public claim of such they are required to read the [Wikipedia list of predicted apocalyptic events](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events?wprov=sfla1) and write a 5 page essay about why they're right but all the hundreds of other folks were wrong. I'm sure it wouldn't change a single mind, but it'd generate some hilarious content. Aside: If you have a few minutes, check out the list. It actually comforts me that this is an intrinsic facet of human stupidity and not something new.
