Journal Journal: blacklist for telemarketers 1

Someone recently posted on the misc@openbsd.org mailing list about wanting something like spamd but for telephone calls.

Basically they said 'possible go figure it out'.

Well, he did.

Journal Journal: Funniest mail header I've ever seen 1

I've been troublshooting a problem with a client that is having problems emailing us.

here's the header:

Received: from molbaksexchange.molbaks.com (mail.molbaks.com [66.15.60.46])

The company is called "Molbaks" and they are running an exchange server (which is funny enough) but when I look at their domain name, all I see is 'sexchange'.

Then, on top of that the message is going to our backup MX for some reason which I jokingly happened to have named 'femail', femail then delivers to the rimary MX that is named 'mail'

So, we have a 'sexchange' server going from femail to mail.

sorry to bother you all with this but I'm easily amused.

Journal Journal: hyperterminal sucks 1

Trying to upgrade the DNS servers on a couple of older Sun's. I didn't want to use my laptop (so I could browse the internet while the upgrade was running in the other room). I dug out a old crusty laptop and connected via serial with hyperterminal.

This has got to be the crappiest terminal program around. It keeps dropping chars, and the best past is that it has no 'break' command. There's no way to cancel the auto-boot on a sun without that. You have to boot it up, halt the machine to get to the OK prompt.

If I wasn't half-way through I'd just un-plug my laptop and go do it with minicom.

Journal Journal: why do mac HD's fill up? 7

My ibook is is cloes to filling up it's HD. I occasionally get warning about it being low on disk space.

If I check the space when I get that message it will says there's about 300MB. BUT, if I reboot, it will jump back to 1.7GB.

I've looked everywhere for temp files, and cache etc....I can't seem to find the files that get cleared on startup.

I've look in all the temp directories I can find, and they typically don't have too much in them. Ideas?

Journal Journal: perl gurus 4

I need a little help with this.

I have a script (written a long time ago and not by me that I'm trying to edit). It's supposed to be grabbing files based on the first three characters.

this part here is supposed to skip files that don't:

next if $temp[8] !~ /^int|ren|svr|crd|sls|pdn/;

it's grabbing files that are similar though like this one:

STMP.pdnjrnsai

ideas?

Journal Journal: Wow, Google is mentally draining 5

I had a phone interview today with Google. They sure ask a lot of strange questions. They sure know how to make a competent guy feel dumb though.

I'm not sure if the questions are bogus or not, or if they really expect their linux admins to know.

They were aking things like
-what system calls does ls make
-how does the kernel know to fork ls
-how does ls get it's pid
-how does test return true or false
-does ls return true or false
-would there be any limitation to using a million chained network switches

And various other really bizarre questions.

All this but then they seemed surprised that you can use php for shell scripts.

I think they were just trying to shake me up, and it worked. Anyone else aware of what system calls ls makes?

Journal Journal: Public confession 2

Ok, I really have to get this off my chest. I, am, addicted, to, work. I go to work on average 5 days a week, and spend roughly 40-45 hours a week doing.....this....despicable thing.

I don't want to.

I want to stop.

I....I just can't

Stop being an enabler by saying that's responsible.

I'm so ashamed of myself. I feel so dirty.

Journal Journal: electronic voting systems article 16

I just went through this article about voting machines.

I don't really see the big deal. Maybe someone else can help me out here.

The way I read it, some company was decertified as a voting machine tester because it's using undocumented, piss-poor procedures for doing so, said company has said they will fix those problems, and when they do they will be re-certified.

Am I missing the part where this is news-worthy?

Journal Journal: Work stuff 1

They made an announcement that the new owners are going to be closing our biggest paper and going through even more layoffs. If it's not bad enough that I've already taken a pay-cut and been on wage freeze for the last year, and probably will be for the next year (that is.....if they even keep me around).

They're dumping huge projects on our little IT department that when done, will render a lot of us obsolete, but in the meantime make it impossible to look for a new job.

On the upside, all of a sudden my gmail is full of various ads for jobs at google. Yes I've already applied for them :-D We'll see how long it takes for them to respond.
