Comment Re:Pain (Score 1) 611

I have a friend of mine who happens to have a terminal form of cancer. Due to chemo, his immune system is not acting as it should and he regularly gets colds. His doctor told him to take over the counter cold medicine (I've forgotten what kind) at a double dose - aka doctor prescribed - and evidently he purchased too much cold medicine over an extended period of time. He DID have his doors kicked in, and he was arrested. This is a disgusting thought and a disgusting response with absolutely zero cause and zero investigative work done. I really hope we manage to get this whole 'war on drugs' figured out before it kills us all.

Please step down from your pedestal. We already have the FDA. We don't need the FDA *AND* the DEA regulating our drug use. We already have the FBI (if you want something federal) and the state police (if you want something state), and/or local police (if you want something county/city/unincorporated) to do the actual enforcement.
But what about stopping drugs before they enter our country?
We have boarder patrol, coast guard, and relationships with foreign governments.

Why is gender only important for high paying and high performance work? Why aren't we crying and complaining about the number of male maids or female garbagemen (even the title shows the gap)? There may be gender gaps based on preference. Nobody ever mentions this. Why do we NEED more women engineers, construction workers, or tech workers? Maybe the women DON'T WANT THOSE JOBS. Stop trying to equalize something that has already found it's equilibrium.

I would rather you show me evidence of an MBA with a long term plan besides padding his own bank account. Show me one that isn't protected by severance packages and bonuses even when the company fails to make a profit.

You need to cite some evidence to back up "regularly".

Google search for the auto industry or financial industry. Even if I cited references you shouldn't be reading them, this is slashdot.

If someone else can do my job cheaper than I can, to the same standard or better than I can - I deserve to lose my job - that's the free market people are always raving about, isn't it.

You have entirely failed to recognize the stupidity of our MBAs that are often in control of these jobs. The qualification for offshoring jobs is not 'cheaper, same/better standard or faster'. It is simply CHEAPER. These MBA types run companies into the ground regularly going for the cheapest alternative with no quality control or time requirements.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't assume those jobs offshore are always terrible either. They very well may be able to deliver on time, above/on spec, and much cheaper than American labor. From what I have seen - it is a crap shoot. Similar things can be said about American contractors as well though, but in America - you have the legal system and can sue the contractor out of existence if they screw you!

I am responding from above 10,000 feet. My connection up here on AirTran's GOGO Inflight service is reasonable. I get approximately 512kbps (bits) down and 256kbps up. Not bad for in flight service. Though, it does cost me about $5 (USD) for about an hour's worth of service. Sunny South Florida - here I come...

pyronide writes: The webcomic and Slashdot meme staple XKCD has posted its thousandth comic today. The comic contains Randal Munroe's signature stick figures arranged to depict the number "1000". Sadly, there are no flying ferrets or raptors visible.

An anonymous reader writes: Anonymous has defaced and has compromised the webserver and database of steel giant Arcelor Mittal. That is news worth mentioning but what is also worth mentioning is that the perl script they used is also in use in several other websites (hospitals — government — companies) meaning that all of them are at risk at the moment.
