Submission + - New IPhone OS brings Ads to Apple (ilounge.com)

parallel_prankster writes: From ilounge iLounge, during Apple’s iPhone OS 4 event today, Steve Jobs announced the creation of a new mobile advertising platform which will be integrated directly into the iPhone OS. The new platform, named iAd, is designed to allow developers to easily add in-app advertising to their applications by supplying ads through a centralized advertising network without having to implement their own solution. Apple will take care of selling and hosting the ads, providing developers with the industry standard 60% of advertising revenue. Is this what google was really was after when they launched Android ?

Submission + - The predictioneer: Using games to see the future (predictioneersgame.com)

parallel_prankster writes: Bruce Bueno de Mesquita is a professor of politics at New York University and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University in California. In his new book, The Predictioneer (The Predictioneer's Game in the US), he describes a computer model based on game theory which — and others — claim can predict the future with remarkable accuracy. The primary website link also has a game page where he provides an online version of the game and information on how to play.
"Over the past 30 years, Bueno de Mesquita has made thousands of predictions about hundreds of issues from geopolitics to personal problems. Overall, he claims, his hit rate is about 90 per cent. So how does he do it? What more, the CIA seems to be using this model to predict the outcome of political situations around the world!!". Submission + - PhD student from India sentenced due to website

parallel_prankster writes: Vikram Buddhi, a PhD student in Purdue University was arrested three years ago and since then he has been languishing in a jail in United States. He was arrested for writing anti-Bush content and publishing it through university’s website, allegedly. Literally fighting his own battle, Buddhi said his lawyer "did not discuss the case properly with him but only touched upon some issues superficially. He also did not discuss with me what he is going to present in court and did not do any meaningful research". The URL for the story is here http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/indians-abroad/IITian-Vikram-Buddhis-sentencing-postponed-to-Friday/articleshow/5326011.cms and here http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/15/vikram-buddhi-anti-bush-b_n_322111.html
The Internet

Submission + - Web addresses in multiple languages (techcrunch.com)

parallel_prankster writes: The regulatory body ICANN has approved plans to let web addresses be written in non-Latin characters in a move that it calls the “biggest technical change” to how the Internet works since its invention four decades ago. The proposal means domain names could be written in languages such as Greek, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi or Cyrillic and be understood natively by the servers that connect computers together over the web. Guess that is supposed to increase the numbers of people surfing the web as they can do so now in their own native language, as if that was the only thing stopping them so far.
Books

Submission + - Barnes and Noble plans for ebooks and Amazon

parallel_prankster writes: According to NYTimes, Barnes and Noble has started its own ebook empire. Around 700,000 titles have been put online, almost double from whats available with Amazon. Better still, the books can be read anywhere, on IPhone, Mac or even a PC. Here is the link to the original article. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/06/technology/personaltech/06pogue.html?8dpc

Submission + - SPAM: Apple allows adult App and then removes it

parallel_prankster writes: iTunes finally had an adult app running and Macenstein had an article on it, however, the app has now disappeared. Wonder what is going on there. What is the reason Apple withdrew ? You can obviously access porn on the Iphone via the internet. Why stop an appmaker from making money? Here is the link to the CNN article. [spam URL stripped] and here is the article in Macenstein from yesterday. [spam URL stripped]

Submission + - MIllion dollar fines for downloading 24 songs ?

parallel_prankster writes: CNN reports that "A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each — a total of $1.9 million — for 24 songs". The link is here http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/06/18/minnesota.music.download.fine/index.html?iref=mpstoryview. Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the RIIA was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable." Who cares if the RIAA lawyers are pleased, what about common people ?
Sun Microsystems

Submission + - Sun cancelling Rock?

parallel_prankster writes: From NY Times, Sun Microsystems may have dropped a bit of weight by the time Oracle officially acquires the company. According to two people briefed on Sun's plans, the company has canceled its Rock chip project, putting an end to one of its biggest revitalization bets. The original article is here http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/15/sun-is-said-to-cancel-big-chip-project/ This also marks the end of the first Transactional Memory implementation in hardware. While this approach looked promising, the hardware challenges were too many. Sun was bold in putting the first step towards a hybrid TM system, however, that seems to have ended. Wonder what this means for future of TM!

Submission + - Facebook group breaking NCAA college hiring rules? 1

parallel_prankster writes: The N.C. State athletics department has told a university student to shut down a Facebook group urging highly touted basketball recruit John Wall to commit to the Wolfpack program. The university's compliance office for NCAA issues, Michelle Lee, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the N.C. State student this morning. The letter cited concerns that the "John Wall PLEASE come to NC STATE!!!" group launched on the popular social networking site constitutes improper contact with a prospective student-athlete, according to NCAA bylaws. Here is the news article linking to the story. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/wall-sparks-facebook-frenzy and here is the link to the facebook group. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=20610793429 How does a group of students who form such a group break NCAA bylaws for improper contact ? What is the NCAA thinking, such groups actually affect the decision making process of the recruit ?
