Human Genome Contaminated With Mycoplasma DNA 123

KentuckyFC writes "The published human genome is contaminated with DNA sequences from mycoplasma bacteria, according to bioinformatics researchers who blame an epidemic of mycoplasma contamination in molecular biology labs around the world. The researchers say they've also found mycoplasma DNA in two commercially available human DNA chips made by biotech companies for measuring levels of human gene expression. So anybody using these chips to measure human gene expression is also unknowingly measuring mycoplasma gene expression too. The mycoplasma genes are clearly successful in reproducing themselves in silico raising the possibility that we're seeing the beginnings of an entirely new kind of landscape of infection. One option to combat this kind of virtual infection is to protect databases with the genomic version of antivirus software, a kind of virtual immune system. But this in itself could make things worse by triggering an evolutionary arms race that selects genes most capable of beating the safeguards."

Australia's 2 Largest ISP's Start Censorsing the Web 133

unreadepitaph writes "Looks like after Stephen Conroy's web filter went down in flames he went quietly behind the backs of Australians and struck a deal with Telstra and Optus to start filtering an undisclosed blacklist of sites from organization within and external to Australia. From the article: 'Electronic Frontiers Association board member Colin Jacobs also expressed concern at the scheme, saying the Government and internet providers needed to be more upfront about websites being blocked and offer an appeals process for website owners who felt URLs had been blocked unfairly. "There is a question about where the links are coming from and I'd like to know the answer to that," Mr Jacobs said."

I agree. MS has become increasingly security savvy to protect their main business - the OS and the Office applications that go on it. The Vista/Win7 permissions model, MS Anti-malware updates, MS Security Essentials, Driver signing, bug bounties, are all examples of MS efforts to up the security. These comments are along expected lines from MS in this age. (And no, I use more Linux than Windows, but credit to be given where credit is due).

Photons? For a RADIO telescope?? Yes, quite a while since your astro classes.

The SNR you quote, which improves as square root of the collected radiation (radio waves), is voltage SNR. In terms of power, you still get a 9dB SNR improvement for 3 times the collected radio waves, and in these electronics, it is electric power which is the ultimately used. However, the improvement factor should again be raised to power 1/3 to get distance, since the amount of signal power collected by an aperture, after spherical dispersion from a star, drops as the third power of the star's distance. So.. (25/9)^(1/3) = 1.4 times.

Newly-Discovered Arm of Milky Way Gives Warped Structure 81

eldavojohn writes "Researchers are now suggesting that a newly-discovered arm of the Milky Way Galaxy gives it a warped structure. Accumulated evidence leads them to claim that an 18-kpc-long arm exists on the other side of the galaxy and this arm traverses some 50 degrees across our sky as an extension of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm (which is one of the two major arms of our galaxy, the other being the Perseus Arm that we can see much more clearly). The researchers conclude that this extension of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm is partially obscured behind the middle of our galaxy because our galaxy is warped 'like the cap from a freshly-opened beer bottle.'"

Here is a post from his site dated Sep 23rd 2010 - Rogues, rapscallions and rascals Thursday September 23, 2010 Carfolio.com has been collecting and collating automotive technical data for many years, before actually having a website or even an internet-connected computer. Realising that there would be interest in this database, I decided to put my data up online in a very useful and functional way. It has always and will always be free for anyone to utilise. Some people, however, have decided to crawl the site and put all the data into their own database and resell and republish the information without attribution, credit or acknowledgement. Some go as far as to add 10mm to the basic dimensions so as to try and disguise their actions... I find that extremely bizarre, as part of the whole idea behind Carfolio.com is to get as many errors found and corrected as possible, and to that end I have always encouraged feedback and dialogue about the specifications. Factual errors are always corrected if sufficient sources are supplied. So as to ensure the best possible quality of data for Carfolio.com users, here is a list of the sites currently known to be using the data without attribution. I will not give them a link, of course, as that will unduly increase their search engine ranking. autofiles dot org carspector dot com data4car dot com carocean dot co dot uk (and de, es, pl, it, fr) scorpiocars dot net ukmotorist dot co dot uk getcarspecs dot com Please be wary of the data from these sites as they are definitely not updated and almost certainly have introduced additional errors when crawling or attempting to obfuscate the source of the data.
