Submission + - Reclaiming the Internet to the People (IETF 88 @ Vancouver) (darkreading.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Internet Enginnering Task Force is having its 88th meeting in Vancouver, BC, and one of the most crowded sessions was the "Hardening the Internet". "There are a lot of technical things we can do. The goal is to make eavesdropping expensive," Bruce Schneier said in his presentation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oV71hhEpQ20). "That's the way to think about this, is to force the NSA to abandon wholesale collection in favor of targeted collection of information." As things stand now, the NSA's surveillance efforts are aided and abetted by the information economy as it stands today".

Ever hear of rain, snow, smoke, smog, fog, dust, or deciduous trees? (Ok, maybe not, this is /. But some people must emerge from their moms' basements occasionally to reload on pizza and Jolt). Long range free space optical transmission is a PITA outdoors unless you can afford to wait around a few days for the weather to change. Indoors, there may be a place for it if you can make it cheaper than cables (installed and operated). Might be a good fit for convention centres. To really work well, you'll want lots of access points that look like ordinary LED "bulbs"... Oh shit, THAT's why those things are made in China, they've gotten us to bug our own houses!

Comment Apple doesn't get it (Score 1) 1

There are legitimate reasons for people to have multiple "role" identities. If an employer provides a device and/or apps to the employee doing a certain job, they don't want to have to buy them again just because that person is transferred, fired, or promoted. Apple needs a way to codify the multiple roles a person holds in a business or even a family. (V.P. Sanitary Upkeep, Chief Cook, Chief Bottlewasher, Deputy Soccer Chauffeur, etc.) When the role moves to a different person, the owner needs a way to say "move apps X, Y, and Z along with the role "Deputy Soccer Chauffeur" from ID "MrsMom" to ID "MrMom".

The carbon content of a wall is insignificant compared to that associated with its insulation R-value considered over the life of a building. Making a panel of Styrofoam insulation does create some emissions, but the offset over time dwarfs it. Problem is, there's no way a manufacturer can know how that panel will be installed, so they can't label it for a carbon savings value.

Submission + - Taiwan Protests Apple Maps That Show Island As Province Of China (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: Taiwan is demanding Apple revise its mapping software and remove a label that describes the island as a province of China, rather than as a sovereign state. The complaint was lodged after local media reports said that users on the island had noticed the change in Apple's latest iOS and Mac OS versions. 'The maps don't acknowledge Taiwan as its own nation. We voiced our disapproval, and hope Apple will make the change,' an official with Taiwan's foreign ministry said Wednesday. This isn't the first time such a mistake was made. Google also labeled Taiwan as a Chinese province in 2005.

Submission + - Women Crucial for Taking Infosec Industry to Next Level

An anonymous reader writes: Women represent only 11 percent of the information security workforce yet they have the academic background and diverse perspective necessary to accelerate change in the information security industry, say the result of a new report by (ISC)2. The findings revealed that women in information security, as a group, have a more diverse academic background than men, and a collective background with slightly greater emphasis on social sciences and business degrees vs. engineering and computer sciences.
