Submission + - Microsoft Looking at Emacs for .Net (eweek.com)

eweekhickins writes: "Microsoft is working on a project that would essentially bring the functionality of the Emacs text editor to .Net. The Emacs text editor has been around for years, developed in 1976 by free software advocate Richard Stallman. Now, enter Microsoft. Mike Sax, a developer and president of Sax Software Corp., Eugene, Ore., said "The interesting part is that instead of putting it into the 'everything and the kitchen sink' Visual Studio, they may be going for a much lighter set of tools that more closely resemble the Unix toolset.""

Submission + - Russia to go all Cyrillic for DNS? (guardian.co.uk) 1

An anonymous reader writes: The Guardian reports that the Kremlin may start an alternate top-level domain: .rf. According to the story, .ru in Cyrillic translates to .py, the top-level domain for Paraguay, which the Russian government feels leads to confusion. This is similar to a move by China, which has their own .net and .com top-level domains in their native character set along with .cn, .com, and .net in ASCII. Will .ru go the way of .su? Will this new top-level domain make it more difficult for phishers and spammers and scammers? Will this give the Russian government more control over the registration process and ultimately lead to censorship?

Journal SPAM: Digital Astrophotography - Review

In the 80's there were a series of commercials for Reeses Peanut Butter Cups that revolved around the theme of accidental meetings between chocolate and peanut butter. The individuals would realize that the two tastes that they loved separately were even better together. Two great loves for many card carrying geeks are digital photography and astronomy. "

Submission + - Has Fox News Excluded Ron Paul?

An anonymous reader writes: From the official campaign website:

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — According to the New Hampshire State Republican Party and an Associated Press report, Republican presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul will be excluded from an upcoming forum of Republican candidates to be broadcast by Fox News on January 6, 2008.

"Given Ron Paul's support in New Hampshire and his recent historic fundraising success, it is outrageous that Dr. Paul would be excluded," said Ron Paul 2008 campaign chairman Kent Snyder. "Dr. Paul has consistently polled higher in New Hampshire than some of the other candidates who have been invited."

Snyder continued, "Paul supporters should know that we are continuing to make inquiries with Fox News as to why they have apparently excluded Dr. Paul from this event."

Please do not contact that New Hampshire GOP. This may not be the GOP's choice.

Submission + - Now Musicians Have Options Says Talking Head

Time Slows Down writes: "Scottish born musician and former record label owner David Byrne says the future of music as a career is wide open and identifies six different distribution models now available to musicians in an article in this month's Wired magazine. At one end of the scale is the 360, or equity deal, where every aspect of the artist's career is handled by producers, promoters, marketing people, and managers. At the other end of the scale is the self-distribution model, where the music is self-produced, self-written, self-played, and self-marketed. Between these two extremes lie four other models (the standard distribution deal, the license deal, the profit-sharing deal, and the manufacturing and distribution deal) that offer different levels of artist control. "No single model will work for everyone," says Bryne. "There's room for all of us. In the recent past, it often seemed like all or nothing, but maybe now we won't be forced to choose.""

Submission + - RIAA-fighting Maine law professor speaks out

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "In a fascinating interview with Jon Newton of p2pnet, Prof. Deirdre Smith of the University of Maine Law School's Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, which is the first law school legal clinic in the U.S. to have taken on the RIAA, says that "our students are enthusiastic about being directly connected to a case with a national scope and significance". She went on to say that the case (Arista v. Does 1-27 (Portland, ME)) is probably one of the first intellectual property cases the clinic has ever taken on, and that if it proceeds further, she expects to also "draw on the considerable expertise in IP among members of our faculty and the Maine Center for Law and Innovation, another program of the Law School". Congratulations to the University of Maine School of Law for giving its law students the opportunity for hands-on experience fighting the RIAA's effort to rewrite copyright law."

Submission + - Unsocial bookmarking site beta (links4later.com)

KevMS writes: Surfing multiple news aggregator and social bookmarking sites like slashdot and digg, at both home and work, and tediously having to email links we found at work to home and vice versa, inspired us to create a "unsocial" bookmarking site. We borrowed from the ideas of del.icio.us and backflip, but then stripped away everything social and web2.0, like sharing, and tag clouds, and added the ability to add a link without visiting it (for NSFW sites and slashdotted sites) using the firefox or IE addon. Come enjoy its minimalist interface and send some feedback, but don't ask for too many features, we wan't to keep it simple.
