Many of which electric cars fail at too. They are poor at top speed (lower continuous peak power, typically limited by battery discharge rates and thermals) and cornering ability (heavy - look at a Tesla vs. Elise). They're way more costly, because batteries are expensive. And they're not going to get cheap, because lithium ion batteries already have economies of scale. EVs have great off the line acceleration and are quiet, but that's about all that's going for them.

The problem is that wealth redistribution requires at least some level of thuggish behavior. It might not be apparent in a large scale, where the IRS and threat of prison do the dirty work, but would quickly become apparent in a small scale, such as a town of 100. What if, in that town, 99 people went to a guy with an order of magnitude more money and said "give me your money, or we'll throw you in the jail"?

The FCC sold of spectrum to Lightsquared without understanding its effect on GPS receivers. The entire aviation fleet would need to have upgraded instrumentation if LightSquared deploys in their spectrum, which was not intended for terrestrial use. There's a good chance GPS, which is now essentially safety critical, is going to win.

Maybe instead of a vast conspiracy, it's because LiFePO4 batteries have a much lower energy density? They can be charged much faster, but would you carry a 200W power brick to take advantage of it?
Lithium based ultracaps have on the order of 10% of the energy density of Li-Ion batteries. Would you carry a laptop that lasted 30 minutes per charge?

Most people will have their batteries replaced if it every stops holding a charge. Seems like a fair tradeoff to have devices last 30% longer per charge.
