Comment Input on smartphone games (Score 1) 60

Like I said, very cool portable game system

How so? Some game genres fit a touch screen, such as point-and-click games, endless runners and other steering games (such as Flappy Bird, Canabalt, Temple Run, Jetpack Joyride, and car racing), and shmups. But beyond those genres, I'm told most people don't buy a MOGA or other Bluetooth gamepad. Without directional input or discrete buttons, good luck getting an exploration-oriented platformer or a fighting game to work well on a flat sheet of glass. I tried the free version of Pixeline and the Jungle Treasure on my Nexus 7 tablet, and making even basic jumps with the virtual gamepad was an exercise in frustration. But if you can think of an enjoyable platformer made for Android, let me know. I'm itching to try its free first level.

As a user I think the OS only gets in the way in ways that can be turned off

Apple charges its users a recurring fee ($99 per year) to turn it off.

For my current usage, there's nothing inherently better or worse about a touch UI, but I find it more engaging anyway.

Then I guess your current usage doesn't involve a lot of typing, especially typing of markup. Making <quote> and <a> elements on a virtual keyboard when posting to Slashdot is an exercise in tedium.

And why should I be interested in changing locale in the middle of a desktop session?

That depends on what you mean by "desktop". I was thinking close your laptop's lid to put it on suspend, get off the airplane, step into a new locale, open the lid change your laptop's locale to match.

But the mobile app will still autoplay if it detects it's on wifi instead of cell data network.

Which would hurt the owner of a Wi-Fi AP with a satellite or cellular uplink. Or does the Facebook respect the operating system's provision to mark an SSID as being metered? (In Android 4.4 "KitKat", it's Settings > Data usage > overflow > Mobile hotspots. There's also a feature for this in Windows 8.)

browsers can't detect the difference between an animated GIF and non-animated until it starts downloading

Other than that if it's not animated, there will likely be a Content-type: image/png HTTP header. Almost nobody uses still GIF anymore. Those not convinced to switch to PNG a decade ago by Unisys's assertion of its LZW patent were convinced by PNG's smaller file sizes on the vast majority of images and practical high-color support.

11:25 "Don't bring any proprietary software to this class." So which cell phone running free software should students be putting in their bags instead? Even Replicant OS, which is based on Android Open Source Project with the non-free parts cut out, uses non-free radio firmware.

12:48 "So how to help? Well you can write free software." So how would you go about feeding yourself while you write a free video game? Video games can't rely on support to the same extent as software critical to a business.

Give Stallman some software with a BSD license and see how he responds.

The FSF recognizes that a non-copyleft free software license is better in some cases, such as when trying to replace entrenched patented MP3 with newcomer free Vorbis (source; more reliable ones would be appreciated). It's also better for programs shorter than the GPL itself, as mentioned in the page about the suggested license for build scripts and the GPL FAQ's recommendation of the Apache License 2.0.

Comment Free software is flexible (Score 4, Interesting) 326

Over the past few years, I've learned that people care more about "freedom" when it's called "flexibility". So I've come up with my own sound bite to summarize the benefit of free software: "Free software is flexible software. Using free software gives you the flexibility to hire anyone to make the program do what you want instead of some other big company wants."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was possible to deploy "service as a software substitute" in a manner consistent with free software philosophy. Make the server software's source code available to the service's subscribers and let the subscriber download backups of his account. AGPL was designed for applications intended for use in free SaaSS, and though Google isn't free, it does offer Takeout for the second point.

Who has produced credible statistics as to how many people use ABP, F.B. Purity, or some other ad blocker? I use an SWF click-to-play extension, but that's it. But then I'm not a Facebook member either. In fact, I've blocked a few of Facebook's hostnames in my laptop's hosts file so I don't even see like buttons.
