Understanding OS X Kernel Internals 199

jglidell writes "The OS X kernel has been in the news alot this past year, whether it's why its slow, Mach/micro-kernel makes it bad, it's going closed source and what not. Amit Singh has put up a new presentation on the innards of OS X. It does a pretty good job of summing up the OS X kernel architecture, and has some pretty detailed diagrams... for instance they show that there are so many process/threads layers in OS X. So if you are in the mood for doing some OS studying then head over."

Boot Camp Flaw Leaves Some Users Fuming 391

Karl Cocknozzle writes "Some users who chose to install Apple's recent beta-offering of Boot Camp without basic precautions (like a full backup) have found themselves unable to boot their Macs to OS X. In a discussion thread on Apple's technical support Web site, more than a dozen users reported that Boot Camp successfully partitioned their hard drive and allowed them to install a working version of Windows, but then would no longer allow them to switch back. The download-agreement page for Boot Camp contains the explicit warning that Boot Camp is still 'Beta' software, and would not be supported if problems arose. On the whole, it sounds like the number of affected users is quite small, but may reflect a common lack of knowledge of what a 'beta' release really is: Not ready for prime-time."

Call for Apple Security 'Czar' 254

conq writes "The second security non-incident to hit the Mac platform in as many weeks has been debunked. People are talking a lot about security on the Mac these days, and the result is that a great deal of FUD is being spread around. BusinessWeek's latest Byte of The Apple column suggests that its time for Apple to appoint a security Czar to get out ahead of the FUD before it spreads much more." From the article: "Creating a CSO position may be viewed by some as an admission of weakness. Still, I say it would be a good way for Apple to inoculate itself against the perception -- warranted or not -- that Mac security may be eroding, and get ahead of the curve for any troubles that may be inevitable. That may not be the case, but in matters related to product marketing, it's the public perception, not the reality that really matters. And once you've lost a user's confidence, it's hard to get it back. Just ask Microsoft."

Why is it that some people can post stories about sctratchin thier butt, and it gest on the front page of Slashdot? But people in the know find a breaking story and can't get it on slashdot.

I found a good story yesterday. One that many people would probably want to read about. I posted it. REJECTED. Why am I not suprised?

I've never had a story posted. I only submit when I find something new and interesting. Much more interesting that someone scratching their butt.

Journal Journal: What is the Profanity Blacklist?

The Profanity Blacklist is a way to avoid, at least partially, profanity and vulgarity on Slashdot. To use it, mark Profanity Blacklist as a friend and in your profile set "Foe of Friend" to a negative number. This will lower the score of posts of users that have posted with profanity or vulgarity.

My foes list has a bunch of trolls on it. Some are new. If anyone has suggestions for names to add or names to take off, please post a comment here. Oh and please link to examples of why it should change. Thank you.

Why is this story such a big deal??
How many of you wolf-crying 'tards have ever paid a dime for your MP3 encoders? Fraunhofer has been charging a license fee for them since the very beginning, but I don't ever remember having inserted a quarter into the coin slot on my PC when I ran LAME.
Do you honestly think you're gonna start having to pay for your copy of XMMS? Of mpg123? Do you think the copies you have now are gonna quit working in a few days?
Stop acting like such irrational little 12-year-olds...

(It is flamebait for sure and I think it is Troll because it didn't take very long for Google to find out he was just being stupid.)

You might be right about FortKnox. I have not decided yet.

I took /dev/trash off the list.
