Comment Re:Dawkin's is a piss poor social scientist (Score 1) 862

We Christians did that 2000 years ago. Our religion says love your enemies as you do your friends, forgive everyone who harms you, if you're punched in the face, turn the other cheek. It says he who lives by the weapon, dies by the weapon. It is a religion of love.

Forgiveness is the very heart of Christianity. The "eye for an eye" was the old covenant, Christ brought a new covenant.

2000 years ago? Did you forget about the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition?

Submission + - Calling Bullshit on Unpaid Internships 1

theodp writes: 'Getting an intern is so hot right now,' writes Stewart Curry. 'It's also bullshit 99% of the time. IrishStu also provides his list of Interning's Big Lies: 1. 'You'll get training.' 2. 'We might hire you after the internship.' 3. 'You get to work with an awesome team.' 4. 'It will look great on your CV.' 5. 'You'll make great contacts.' So, who does it really hurt, Stu? 'Here's who it hurts — interns. You have them working for nothing...Here's who it hurts — people who need a wage in order to survive...Here's who it hurts — companies that want to pay people a decent wage for work they do.' Inside Higher Ed also checks in on The Great Intern Debate.

Submission + - Taiwan follows Intel on considering LTE over WiMax (techeye.net)

bossanovalithium writes: The LTE and WiMax debacle continues in Taiwan, perhaps not quite coincidentally as Intel finally announced that, yes, it will consider LTE too.

Intel has for a while now been dawdling on delivering WiMax services to the region which has lead to officials getting mighty peeved. The Taipei Computer Association had been hoping that Otellini would fly over to Taiwan to discuss plans but so far there's been no such luck, at best it received comfort words and crocodile tears from Intel country manager Jason Chen who said his outfit is "committed" to bringing it to the region. TechEye was told that Intel was committed to the WiMax standard.

However Ottelini at IDF has now approached the touchy subject of looking at LTE as well. He said that, despite his company's previous line that LTE ain't the way forward, it is focused on integrating wireless into silicon and it plain makes sense to have a go at LTE as well as WiMax.

The Story of Dealing With 33 Attorneys General 172

microbee writes "Early this year, Topix, a popular community forum, faced investigation from 33 state Attorneys General for the practice of charging a fee for 'expedited review' of content that was flagged as inappropriate. The case was settled on August 9th, with Topix dropping the fees in question. Now TechCrunch is running an article by Topix CEO Chris Tolles, in which he talks about his experiences dealing with so many Attorneys General. Quoting: 'This is going to happen more — The States' Attorneys General are the place that complaints about your company will probably end up. This is especially true if you host a social or community based site where people can post things that others may dislike. And, there's no downside to attacking a company based in California for these guys (MySpace, Facebook, Craigslist have all been targets in the past couple of years). Taking complaints from your citizenry and turning them into political capital is simply too good an opportunity for these guys to pass up.'"

Julian Assange Faces Rape Investigation In Sweden — Updated 1017

mpawlo was one of many readers who have sent news that a warrant has been issued in Stockholm, Sweden for WikiLeaks founder and spokesman Julian Assange. The investigation apparently involves "one report of rape and one report of harassment." The story was broken by Swedish tabloid Expressen (original in Swedish), and later picked up by more reputable sources like CNN and the BBC, who say the warrant has been confirmed by Swedish authorities. The WikiLeaks Twitter feed has commented three times about the charges so far, first saying they were warned of 'dirty tricks,' then that they hadn't been contacted by Swedish police, and then a statement from Assange saying the charges are without basis.
Update: 08/21 15:58 GMT by S : Multiple sources are now reporting that the warrant for Assange's arrest has been withdrawn. Aftonbladet has coverage in Swedish. Chief prosecutor Eva Finne said, "I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape."

Building a Homemade Nuclear Reactor In NYC 219

yukk writes "Mark Suppes, a web developer for Gucci, is working on his own personal fusion reactor. His work in a NYC warehouse using $35,000 of his own money and $4,000 raised on a website has made him the 38th independent researcher recognized as creating a working fusion reactor. How's that for a hobby?"

Submission + - 'Innocent infringement' to go to Supreme Court? (blogspot.com) 1

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: Several years ago a federal court in Texas ordered the RIAA, in an 'innocent infringement' case against a teenager, to either accept $200 per infringed work, or to go to trial over the 'innocent infringement' issue, in Maverick Recording Co v. Harper. Recently, an appeals court reversed, saying that the defendant could not avail herself of the 'innocent infringement' defense since there were CD's, bearing copyright notices, available in stores, even though the copies she had made were from mp3 files which bore no such notice. Now, a petition for certiorari has been filed on the defendant's behalf, arguing that the 5th Circuit's ruling would make it impossible for anyone to interpose an innocent infringement case, even where they had never seen a copyright notice. The lawyers filing the petition on defendant's behalf are the same firm that represented Jammie Thomas in her second trial, and the motion which resulted in her verdict being reduced from $1.92 million to $54,000.

Submission + - Blizzard Boss Says DRM Is A Waste Of Time (thinq.co.uk) 2

Stoobalou writes: Blizzard founder, Frank Pearce reckons that fighting piracy with DRM is a losing battle.

His company — which is responsible for the biggest videogame of all time, the worryingly-addictive online fantasy role player World of Warcraft — is to release Starcraft 2 on July 27th and Pearce has told Videogamer that the title won't be hobbled with the kind of crazy copy protection schemes which have made Ubisoft very unpopular in gaming circles of late.

Starcraft 2 will require a single online activation using the company's Battle.net servers, after which players will be allowed to play the single-player game to their hearts' content, without being forced to have a persistent Internet connection.

Canadian Blood Services Promotes Pseudoscience 219

trianglecat writes "The not-for-profit agency Canadian Blood Services has a section of their website based on the Japanese cultural belief of ketsueki-gata, which claims that a person's blood group determines or predicts their personality type. Disappointing for a self-proclaimed 'science-based' organization. The Ottawa Skeptics, based in the nation's capital, appear to be taking some action."
